Where's the starter?

On my son's 88 Corrola?
I've looked and can't seem to find it.

Any pointers?

Any ideas on what the problem is? I'm thinking maybe starter or solenoid (more likely solenoid) He drove it over to Blockbuster (4 blocks or so) And when he got in it was dead when he turned the key, no clicks no nothing. Am I on the right track?

Turn headlights on... try to start car.

If headlights dim a bit then it is battery related.

If not, find the starter and tap it "gently" with a hammer while bumping the key to the start position. It may have a dead spot. It will at least get him home if you can start.

Thanks I'll try that. I was going to try to short it with a screw driver but couldn't find it!

uh well it might be better to just think battery insted of assuming some component is broken eh? seriously though how old is bat? they go every so often and unless you have had trouble with starter there is no reason to susspect it

Worst case, take the battery to AutoZone for testing. Could even be an altenator not charging the battery.

The hammer trick works quite well. Been there, done that when I was stranded one time.

If it has a manual transmission, just push it off and pop the clutch if you need to move the car for any reason.

If it's an automatic then the neutral safety switch could be hosed. If it's a standard shift then the clutch switch might be shot. I'd get the battery checked first since they will do it for free. I've also had problems with lost grounds.

Do the radio or headlights work? If not you may have lost a ground. Look for the one that connects from the battery to the block or the frame. Remove the bolt and clean the connection with a wire brush or a file.
