Hey everyone! Let's Puu-teeeee!!!
Or what are some good wood putties?
Like our hardwood floor has some awesome putty in it.
It looks rock hard and it looks good.
I've tried a couple and they are gross hard to work with and look bad.
Any one have a favorite? | |

Which did you use ?
Nitrocellulose-based - This type of wood putty cures very fast and can be cleaned up or thinned with acetone or lacquer thinner. Brands include: Famowood, DAP brand "Wood Dough", Miracle WOOD, and others.
Acrylic-based - This wood putty cleans up with water until it cures. Acetone, toluene, or xylene can be used for cleanup after the putty has dried. Brands include: Elmer's Carpenters wood filler, Fill N' Finish, ZAR wood path, and 3M brand Just like Wood, and others.
Gypsum-based - This putty is sold as a powder that you mix with water. It cleans up with water until its dry and then cannot be re-dissolved after it has dried. Brands include: Durham's Water Putty and other brands.
I have used the gypsum with good results.

| Wow, Vern! You know your stuff!
I don't use wood filler or admit to it, anyway...
But I've heard that Famowood is pretty reliable stuff, plus it comes in various wood colors! |

Nitrocellulose actually uses wood powder (I think) and it binds to the wood better. I don't know why, it just does. Quote: Originally posted by surreal
Anyone used the sticks you melt? | Yes, for doing simple repairs to scratches and gouges, I wouldn't use it as a wood filler, though. Quote: Originally posted by surreal ....I bought Famowood for the plant to use. | Yep!
See? |

I like Dap, and you can get it in colors & tint it too.
Elmer's is harder to work with, alright. Hard to tint too.
THe stuff you melt...You mean like furinture crayon?
No good for floors & you can't finish over it. At least not the stuff I'm thinking of.

What are you using it for? Each type is suited better for a particular application.
BTW...if you like whats on your floor, find out what they used.

I can't it was made in europe.
I'm going to use it on my pine walls, unless of course I just give up and paint in a knot or something where I puttied it.
I also have an old log mantle, I'm not sure if I'm going to patch it or just fill the deep checks with finish. They look pretty cool.
