household hints and help.

thought it might be nice to have a thread where we could post little gems of wisdom for household problems.

I'll start with one of my favorites for rusted bolts. (works well for lug nuts on cars and exhaust manifolds.) heat the bolt with a propane torch and apply wax to the part.(candle)

The wax gets pulled in like solder and lubricates the threads.

and
if you can't get your locking pliers(vise grips) tight enough. get it as tight as you can and then use another pair to tighten it further. Just remember yor going to ruin the bolt head.

hmmmmm well if you have semi gloss or glossy paint on walls and your kids decide to go on a crayola wall painting spree don't wash with soap and water.

Wash with WD40 and a soft cloth. once all done wash again with reg soap and water. Works like a charm.

Note: does not work with walls painted with flat paint. it will actually ruin it.

Red KOOL AID on a childs white shirt/blouse can be removed with toothpaste, works even better if the toothpaste has a whitening agent in it. Just rub the toothpaste in with your finger. Rub it hard.

Using Coke (cola) on a battery terminal will aid in removing debris build-up. Pour a couple of drops onto terminal, and using an old toothbrush, scrub vigorously. Let dry before replacing the connectors.

Peanut butter takes gum out of Hair.

Hairspray will take Ink off. (very useful)

SOS pad will take permanent ink off walls (will destroy finish tho )

Angelcat, don't drip the coke on your bumper, it will eat the finish off of paint (what a scary thought, people drink that stuff)

WD 40 also removes heatsink grease off of your fan and chip.

Vinegar removes hard water buildup.

To clean minerals out of the dishwasher run a cycle with 1/2 cup of Tang added.

This is a gross one, but effective:

If you have huge cockroaches entering your house through crevices/holes, plug them with steel wool or even better iron wool from a hardware store. Not only does it stop them from coming in but snares them as well.

Vinigar is an excellent way to clean your coffee maker. If you have hard water it will eventually clog your coffee maker. Every month or so put a 50/50 mix of water and vinigar through the machine(make sure to rinse with another pot of water afterwards).

Some GOOP hand cleaner can be used if you dont have any wd-40 for the crayon "art" of the children.

Also whenever you do your household cleaning, carrying an old no longer used toothbrush is an excellent way to get into those small crannys.

Non-abrasive hand "Goop" will remove tar from the paint on your car without damaging the paint.

Canned air is great for dusting knick knacks, especially Manzanita.

Canned air sprayed upside down on gum will freeze it and if on linolium it can then be easily popped off, in carptet, it will be easier to break out or it will crumble, making it easier to remove.

Zipper getting hard to zip? Use candle wax to lube it

More later.
