Canada moves to legalize same sex marital unions.

Looks like Canada will soon be the 3rd country in the world to legalize and codify marraige between same sex couples, joining Belguim and the Netherlands. I must say that it's about damn time that politicians began to recognize the right of homosexual couples to marry. Marraige is no longer a strictly male-female relationship.

hmmm...interesting. i'm sure there are going to be a lot of posts about "darn liberals" and "close-minded conservatives" and such but i hope we can be civil about this.

personally i agree with this move on the part of the government. whether or not this is morally right (that's another thread) is, IMO, irrelevant. As far as the government is concerned the only reasons to outlaw same sex marriages are moral reasons, and in this case those moral reasons are directly tied to religion (it's not like killing or stealing in that they are universal). it doesn't cause any harm to anyone, whether physical, economical, etc which would be the other reason to outlaw it. I believe that this is one of those moral issues that should be left to the citizens discretion instead of the government coming in and forcing their beliefs on you.

IMO just because something is legal doesn't make it moral, and just because something isn't moral doesn't make it illegal. adultery, respecting your parents, etc are all legal, but immoral. speeding is not immoral, but is illegal. so i don't think the two are related.

Those wacky Canadians---they even think marijuana should be a non-issue... (like the Netherlands and Belgium)

Its gotta be what has led them to the same sex marriage thing...

Morality aside, it's all about the money and benefits, not the piece of paper. Follow the money trail. Wait until US corporations have their health insurance premiums increased for this new spousal coverage, let alone the IRS.

I wish they would make it illegal to respect your parents, because that's just wrong.

IMO:

I hope as few countries as possible do this. We seem to be living in an era where all traditions, cultures and heritages have to be challenged, altered and warped, and all changes are deemed acceptable without question. Next someone is going to decide that they want to marry their dog, and you're going to find lobbies, activists, and theories to explain it and make it acceptable and hip.

No thanks.

I believe this has already happened. A couple of years ago, I saw a story about a guy who wanted to marry his dog. I can't remember if he was serious or if he was acting out against what he sees as our defilement of marriage in the US.
