Geek or Nerd?

My girlfriend, well now fiancee, have had this on going debate on whether "techies", "computer people", etc, are nerds or geeks. I keep telling her that we prefer to be called geeks, but she insistes that being a nerd is better and being a geek is like the lowest life form.

I disagree with her and say that we would much rather be a geek and nerds are the "wierred" people.

I am now posing the question to my fellow IMOers. What do you perfer to be called, nerd or geek? and why? What's the difference between the two?

imo a big difference is a geek isn't necessarily intelligent where as a nerd is but there are a lot of other differences. A nerd is always a geek but a geek is not always a nerd. For example in the Simpsons (strangely enough quoting the simpsons all the time makes me a geek I suppose) Millhouse is a geek and so is Martin, but Martin is a nerd.
I'd say yeah a lot of tech people like to be called geeks, but alas many are nerds as well.

I read once that Geeks get um, "female relations" while nerds don't. So, I will go with Geek.

That sounds like something a geek wrote.

Nerds do get ladies, look at Bill Gates. His wife is a doctor and not very attractive which means it's probably a real relationship.

in any case i voted nerd cause a nerd is inherently a geek, but it's not always the other way around. so a nerd gets the best of both worlds, so to speak.
