Store Branded Stuff

We buy store brand stuff cause it's cheaper, but today we learned a lesson.
We found one of our cats in the niegbors yard, and he was very sick. So we took him to the vet,and found that the store brand flea collars (Freds store) had caused toxic poison, and his liver had shut down.
He didn't make it And the kids are terribly upset,so I am going now to bury him.
Any way if you are using these cheap collars on your pets take them off.We learned a very costly lesson.
The vet says that this is 6-7 cases in the last month of the same thing. In fact our white cat was also sick, but managed to loose the collar before it killed him.But he was sick for nearly a week, and still walks funny.
So if you use flea collars use the name brands,or better yet call the vet to find out what is safe for your pet.

Sounds like you need to notify the ASPCA and the attorney general's office. Those collars should be pulled. Think what they could do to some kid chewing on them.

My sympathies for your loss. The loss of my two cats would be devastating.

The vet made a call, and the local store pulled the collars from the shelf. But I'm wondering about the other stores, this is a fairly large chain of stores.I hate to see this happen to other people

Wouldn't be too hard for you to contact them..

Perhaps if you can save a few cats getting this product off the shelf you will feel better. Maybe call the corporate office a few hundred times.

Darned well told! I am astonished that this chain would allow an obviously un-tested and dangerous product on their shelves!

I'm sorry to hear about your poor kitty, BC.

Time to open up a can of Whoop-Ass on these greed-heads!

I couldn't believe that this was the cause of his illness.
I think I will shop for safer items from now on.
You just assume that these things are safe being sold in the stores and all. What if it was the talcum power,or shampoo

Really makes ya stop and think

BC, I agree with Surreal. Try and get the store to pull the whole lot from every store. Fast.

When you email them, make sure you include your vet's name and contact details so they can confirm the collars are the cause of the cats' deaths. Otherwise the might just assume you are just another unsatisfied customer who has a rant.

Surely there is a govt dept somewhere that regulates poisons like that? Maybe a call to your local council might start the wheels in motion a bit.

Cheers
Mick

Package is required to list percentage of active ingredient.

Were these collars chemical other then what is commonly found in name brand collars?

What was the chemical?

Yes, but how can you know what is safe?

Yes. You have the right to assume that what is sold (under a generic name) is safe.

The tangent I'm going off on here, is that your usual "store brands" are simply oversupply rebrandings (i.e., a Hartz cat flea collar being sold under a different [store] name...the Hartz company makes it, but they are over-manufacturing their own product, so they 're-brand'...this is happening a LOT these days)...

What has happened here, (IMO) is that this chain of stores took on a 'privateer' manufacturer, one with little expertise in cat flea collar manufacturing, but long on mfg. capability...

In short, not much attention on responsibility, but a HUGE amount of attention on $$$$.
