Talk MP3 and Switzerland...

... yesterday i just found out that Switzerland has got no law against downloading MP3 (also copyrighted music), but we are not allowed to share the downloaded files, so i can legally download MP3 files without getting problems isnt that cool? there are already two FTP servers for downloading, that's awsome

you will tell me that it's the worst thing to download music for free and dont pay them but hey if you could do it legally you would also right?

I don't even bother to do it legally. On the other hand, I buy pretty much everything I download at some point, so I don't feel so bad.

I remember when both of my bands would come up on a search in Napster. That was so cool.

It has yet to be ruled in the US that downloading MP3 files is illegal. I'm sure the RIAA would beg to differ but they haven't won yet.

And of course, it is explicitly legal under copyright laws to share MP3s with friends.

I should also add that no independent study has shown that P2P actually cuts into the sales of CDs.

Copying a DVD or movies off a DVD is strictly illegal.

On the other hand, with the typical quality of a downloaded movie, I don't believe this is a serious threat to the DVD industry.

One question about movies well and music too kind of. In an earlier case, the supreme court ruled that it was legal to tape something off TV or radio and give it (not sell) to a friend(as taping was seen as a time delaying device). Now if this file was copied from one tape to another to say remove the commercials would this still be legal? Which raises a further question, if it were possible to save the format from TV into something a computer could read would that then be legal under the supreme court precident would that still be legal? I mean I know this is all semantics but isn't that most of what legality is?

if the movie was in TV why not download it from internet? it's nearly the same, today you can record with a DVD recorder the movie from TV, so why is it still illegal to share (movies which were already in TV?)

Well that was really what I was getting at. Is it really illegal to share those movies which have been shown on TV?
