"soft collar" question

While looking on Ebay I found this .

Looking down about the 7th pic there is a strange assembly that looks like a tree with the arms turned up. The caption says it is a place for "soft collars".

When I googled all I got were the neck support devices. I dont think they(the men) in the 1920 would have used those, so what went on the arms??

Can anyone tell me what soft collars are?

Vern

Well, soft collars we use today are foam neck braces (no hard bits in 'em - they are all soft).

According to this site that's abit like what "soft collars" werer like in the early 1900's

Cheers

Vern.
Straight off the cuff [pun pending]
Twas a time when Collars and Cuffs were not part of a shirt.

Consider you are wearing a three piece suit.
Jacket, Vest and Trousers.
All that was seen of the shirt was the collar and cuffs.

So that was all that was changed on a daily basis.
[Remember: folks washed once a week if they were lucky in those days]

I have a 'Collar box' here that belonged to my Great GrandFather.
Also a chain of button studs.
Similar thing. The shirts had only button holes on either side of the front opening, so you threaded studs into them.

Starched Collars were the best part of the laundry then.
They buttoned to your shirt.
And were often seen turned up above the lapels of your jacket.

Hope this gives some clues.
I've got pics somewhere of my GGFa dressed in this way.
circa 1880 - 1920

Cheers R.

So a soft collar is really a thin strip of material that was flexible as opposed to a "hard collar"(thin strip of material bonded to a stock material that would stand up).

All collars were seperate from a persons shirt! I am so glad we dont have to wear this stuff today.

Got it.

Thanks for the quick answers!
