Depression
hey guys. im sure we all get depressed now and then. but i seem to get that way quite often. i really have no reason to be depressed, i have a great life, lots of friends, etc. i keep telling myself this but it doesnt help. i am not seriously depressed, like contemplating suicide or anything, i am just kinda "blah'ed out" as me and my friends say. sort of melancholy i guess.
any suggestions other than professional help? i dont think i am bad enough to see a doctor, i am just looking for an easy fix.
thanks!
drew

I feel the same way. Same as you, I have no reason to but I do.
Just try to do things that you enjoy. I go play pool, hang out with my friends, visit my parents... spend lots of time here on TechIMO.
Seriously, do things that you like to do that make you feel happy. That helps a lot.
Or try to see if there is something that is causing your blah's. Mine is work, I love what I'm doing but I don't like or respect the company I'm working for. Unfortunately, I need money to pay the bills and I can't get interviews anywhere so I'm stuck.

School could very well be the reason, Its called end of term burn out sydrome. I get them every time about 2 weeks or so before the term ends.
then i get a short break from it between terms and get all pumped up again and rare'n to go and then I'll do that same slump thingy towards the end of the term.

Couple questions for ya cracked....
1) Do you exercise?
2) What kind of music do you listen to?
Exercising has always been (for me anyways) a great way to relieve stress and also build up self-esteem. You feel good after a good hard workout and seeing the improvements in your physical self helps out your self-esteem.
As far as music goes...here's a quote from the movie High Fidelity:
"I don't know if I'm listening to this music because I'm depressed...or I'm depressed because I listen to this music"

Along the lines of exercise, do you do anything constructive? Something where there is a tangable end result that you can look at ant say "I did that"?
Home repairs are a great pick me up depression wise for me, and they get me out of trouble with the wife...
Seriously, I have been there, to the point of professional help and still failing. What saved me was meeting Angelcat. (Thank you).
If this keeps up, then talk to us. We will at least listen, I can promise that much. Right everyone?

And if you don't now, try to spend more time outside, doing SOMETHING, anything. That always helps me out a lot. By the end of winter I can barely motivate myself to leave my bed, but I spend a few days down by the river and life seems a bit better every day.
Currently waiting for the temp to climb another couple degrees so I can get on the bike, in fact. | |

From Ken's 'keep it simple' exercise program-
Pushups - as many as you can - then
Situps - as many as you can - then pushups again, then situps (3x each)
walk the dog a mile every night - or just walk
do this every day for a month - you'll start feeling better, remember - it's baby steps when starting out. after a month, you can step it up more.

GDay drew.
Stevie Ray Vaughn had a great way to describe his depression.
He called it the 'Black Dog' that used to descend upon him.
I concur with that, I know it well.
Point is i do know it. Doesnt make it any easier to shift.
But recognising it when it comes, helps.
Easy fix? Dont think there is one.
Well there maybe, but for mine it is not in a pill.
Folks who say 'well just get off your butt and go'.
Do not understand the lethargy that comes with depression.
Depression comes in many degrees, it is as individual as the self.
It is a matter of mental health.
Which is just as important as physical health.
Perhaps more so.
If you are concerned by your current situation.
Then seek proper medical advice.
Dont be fobbed off with the old lines that 'your just a slacker' or 'all she needs is a good r**t'
Not true.
Me. I just put up with mine.
And drink more.
R.
