Because they're inside. Their heads are not going to hit the pavement or a tree, and if they wear their seatbelts, they're not going to hit the windshield/steering wheel/dashboard either.

A helmet would also interfere with the whiplash protector (often miscalled a headrest).

Wearing a hemlet inside a car is like wearing deodorant in a pool...it doesn't make a difference.

For convenience.

Its to much trouble to put on a heavy, sweaty(will be after I use it once), bulky helmet. For the normal driver who drives within the speed limit, doesnt drink, smoke, talk on the cell, etc, it isnt worth the trouble.

Even though it would save lives, it's not worth the hassel for most people. Same reason cars don't have role cages and 4 or 5 point harnesses instead of seat belts. The several dozen drivers lives it would save (if everybody had these features) are not much in the scope of how many millions of drivers there are in the US.

This is a subject with many, many variables.
So it is not easy to find a consensus opinion.

This is my brief POV.

People who sustain head injuries in motor vehicle crashes.
Are normally unrestrained by other devices.
Seatbelts, Airbags and the like.

Consider then Helmets as a "Safety" device.

Thus:

Adding weight to the head of a potential crash trauma victim.
May preserve the integrity of the skull.
But will increase the likely damage to the spine.

So the situation of the 'hangman fracture' arises.
As [too] often seen in motorcyclists injuries.
Where the spine is severed at the C2 or C3 vertebra.

I consider this a serious subject.
It gets floated by the 'boffincrats' every couple of years.

Interested in the opinions of those medical or paramedical folk we have here.
Anyone like to comment?

Appreciate the thought maface.
ChrsR.
