This is a subject with many, many variables.
So it is not easy to find a consensus opinion.
This is my brief POV.
People who sustain head injuries in motor vehicle crashes.
Are normally unrestrained by other devices.
Seatbelts, Airbags and the like.
Consider then Helmets as a "Safety" device.
Thus:
Adding weight to the head of a potential crash trauma victim.
May preserve the integrity of the skull.
But will increase the likely damage to the spine.
So the situation of the 'hangman fracture' arises.
As [too] often seen in motorcyclists injuries.
Where the spine is severed at the C2 or C3 vertebra.
I consider this a serious subject.
It gets floated by the 'boffincrats' every couple of years.
Interested in the opinions of those medical or paramedical folk we have here.
Anyone like to comment?
Appreciate the thought maface.
