Iraqi "intellectual capacity" for producing unconventional weapons was sufficient justification for the successful U.S.-led war against the country, a senior Bush administration official said today, addressing criticism that U.S. forces so far have found no illicit weapons there.

In this article, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs John Bolton lowers the bar practically to the ground. By this standard, practically any country (except possibly Haiti and Mali) is ripe for invasion.

Here's my counter-point. What if "to the best of our knowledge" they had WMD, and also take into conideration the actions of Iraq relating to inspectors. Their continuing lack of cooperation and dodginess indicted them. They were still not in compliance with 1441 - regardless of whether or not they actually had WMD. They did not act in accordance with an innocent party. I believe we made the correct logical conclusion based on what was known and the evidence presented.

This also leads me to believe that they did posess outlawed weapons (which of course we actually knew they did as recently as 1998) within the last year, and knowing that military action was coming, staged a regime shift. Just a guess. But at least the Iraqi people are no longer under the thumb of Hussein.
