Yay. Big laser guns. Maybe we can actually shoot ICBMs this time. Oh well, gotta give the people credit. An ICBM goes faster than a bullet, only it's alot bigger.

I never understood the strategic missle defense system that Regean wanted to setup in the 1980's. Especially since ICBM's do move faster then any kind of projectile.

Using laser cannons however, a rocket would be hard pressed to beat the speed of light. The cost of it is still going to be huge. Especially if they go with lasers. Especially since (at least to the general publics knowledge) lasers aren't common weapons. Who knows maybe they are and the militaries are saying.

I was just being sarcastic. I highly doubt lasers will be used. Lasers aren't really good weapons to use because the scientists in the Star Wars days had problems making a REAl powerful laser that was electricly powered. It was some kind of barrier they couldn't break through. I forgot the physics to it, but it's why we aren't nuking cities with orbiting lasers.

They'll probably use conventional delivery systems. Like VERY fast rockets designed to intercept ICBMs (something like patriots) and the flying satelites we are testing now.

Using the success of the Patriot missle system in Iraq against SSMs (admittedly only semi-ballistic), the opponents of SDI don't have much credibility with me.

As SDI technology improves and matures as a result of increased research and testing, eventually ICBMs will be about as useful militarily as massed cavalry charges against machine guns.

The primary argument against SDI has always been mainly a bit of ideological hysteria from the Progressive Left around the world... hating and fearing the power and freedom that the American economic and political system have produced.

SDI is just a matter of solving a complex technological problem, something the American system does better than any other system... and I would much rather have such a defensive system in the hands of America than any other country.

Who knows, maybe with a deployed, successful SDI in place Pakistan, Iran, India, N. Korea etc., can put the resources they waste now on nuclear weapons and delivery systems into more productive uses for the benefit of their own citizens.

I doubt that the countries you mentioned would suddenly have a change of heart to help their own citizens. They would just start researching ways of breaching the SDI.
