Interesting read on DMCA

Somewhat long - but well worth your time.

I'm not a file-trader/sharer or proponent of it. But - this DMCA thing really scares me. I don't like companies or organizations being able to issue a supeona with only a rubber stamp by a court clerk.

I agree that something needs to be done about music and software pirating but this kind of stuff isn't going to solve squat. You're just going to inconvenience legitimate users.

If they want to reduce piracy on music just charge less then I don't know how many times over cost they do charge. When it costs about $1.00 to make a music CD (including studio equipment and all salaries (including the artist)). Just charge $5.00 to $7.00 and watch people flock back to purchasing CDs. I'm sure the same could be done for movies and software.

Just my opinion.

If you they dont like the idea of lowering prices they should add content/value. Put some videos on the CD or something.

As it is right now I pay $15-17 for a CD with 1 or 2 songs on it I like. When I bought my first CD player in about 1990 they kept saying prices would go down to match cassettes, and they havent. Perhaps a class action suit? Also, doing away with singles hurts them.

It is scary...and we need to stop it before it's implemented

To me anyway, prices for CDs have gone UP since they were first released. Unfortunately the DMCA ties with the Paladium spec for PC hardware and software.

Sigh...

The RIAA's figures concerning CD sales just apall me. The entire market has been depressed for the last 18 months - stocks are down, company profits are down, consumers have less discresionary (sp?) income - yet they blame lower cd sales on P2P piracy.

So, if P2P were effectively killed tomorrow, and CD sales were still down.. who would they blame then?

What the RIAA doesn't get is that DVD sales are killing their CD sales. DVD's have gone mainstream in the last year. If I've got the choice of spending $15 (walmart baby!) on a DVD vs. $15 for a music CD - the DVD wins everytime. DVD sales compete head on for the consumer's $ - and give a much bigger bang for the buck. Maybe they should sue the MPAA

- perhaps if I miss this months sales goal, I can blame P2P - sheesh!

Now I'd love to see that happen, two multi-billion dollar industries fighting it out in court.

I agree completely. You can buy DVD movies for the same price as audio CDs now. The movie studio's know that people have minimal income to spend on things now.
