I fail to see the controversy. In academia, profs often use work researched by underlings, and still claim the credit. It's a matter of who expects to get what from their work, and what expectations are.
I have no difficulties with a journalist who uses sources well; that may include other journalists, surely. He didn't lie when he said he visited the place, and the other journalist contributed to his story freely and without requesting to be acknowledged.
So, what's the fuss?
