how about if i cover a shift here and there for someone at the helpdesk?

It depends on the state, but in most cases, the answer is yes. You've lost a significant portion of your income and you've been paying into the system, so go get what's yours.

I was let go by a former employer, went out of business, and I applied for unemployment benefits even though I already had a job lined up. I was out of work for two whole weeks, only got unemployment for one (PA rules). Ended up with about $200 after taxes. What a hassle.

Ok, just went to check, it depends on your hours. So you need some kind of proof what your hours were and what they will be (or won't be over the summer). Should be able to get benefits with no problem.

In order to receive benefits, you must file biweekly claims for the weeks you are totally or partially unemployed. The first eligible week on your claim is the waiting week. You must file a claim for, and get credit for, a valid waiting week before you will receive any benefit payments.

Note: The waiting week is never paid. As such, your first benefit payment will be for one week of benefits.

If you do work a few hours here and there, you'll have to report it - and those earnings will be deducted from that claim period.
