Phrases that don't make sense.

Sometimes I come across phrases that are just either plain messed up or don't make sense at all.

1. Life is a bowl of cherries.
My interpretation of when a person says this. They usally say this in a content to mean that life is sweet and deliousous. To me this phrase doesn't mean that at all. Its acturally a true statement. Life will be sweet for a while then come a time that you must get past the pits in life. therefore life is bowl of cherries would be correct becacuse thier are pits in cherries.

2. Half Full/ Half Empty.
Most people look at this is how its stated in content. To me either works for me. I see half empty and I think I got plenty of time left before filling up again. I see half full, and I think I got plenty of time before filling up again. So to me this phrase makes no sense to me at all.

3. No if ands or buts.................
I probably get this write wrong, I always get it wrong and I do understand its concepts however a little light to shed on to remember the order of the words?
the content of this I know to mean that if something is stated that thier is no changes in that statements thus no if ands or buts.

Im sure their are more and can not think of them at the moment.

What are you comments on these and what are some you know that just plain ole don't make sense to you..

My oddball thoughts for the day.

half full should only be said during the act of filling something up
since, for example, you drink a drink.. you dont fill up a drink when you drink it, so that means you are just making it closer to empty

Great thread, Neo! I gotta put in my .02, since it's obvious we do the same thing (i.e., grind our brains on the same stone) GAH! what a picture

#1) The cup is half empty/full: Actually, my friend Paul figured it out, to wit: The cup is merely half enjoyed! Pretty good, hah?

Other ones, though, are a bit more cryptic:

#2) Nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'. This is one from my childhood, in a mostly black neighborhood, and while I understand the intent of it, it is almost impossible to quantify. The INTENT of it is to say, if you don't make the effort, you'll be left with nothing. Fair enough, as far as it goes, but....HUH???

But that's not so bad, though, not as bad as this one:

#3) The early bird gets the worm.
Such nonsense. If you've been awake for the better part of the 20th century, you will have learned that the 2nd mouse gets the cheese!

the half full and half empty still doesn't make sense. i see your POV however, either way I see it. I still have plenty of time beore needing a refill.

well for early birds get the worms.

wouldn't that to mean the early bird (early riser) get first dibs on whatever? What does the mouse and cheese have to do with that phrase?
