Kids I need Mosquito Repellent!

Hi Guys!

Well tonight my 6 yr old son Tyler was enjoying his pool on our back deck...I sprayed Deep Woods Off on him before going outside. Within 10 minutes I noticed he already had 3 bites on his back...so I sprayed him again to insure full coverage. It didn't help, he got 4 more bites!

I feel like it's my fault for letting him get bit up so much...what do you guys recommend to stop the darn bugs?!

Thanks!
Mike

Burning camel dung is highly effective, Martoch.

Smelly, though. Keeps ppl away as well.

We have mozzies in squadrons here in the summer, and those elctronic bug zappers work pretty well, especially at night. We have one in our yard near the pool area, and it keeps the critters manageable. Also use personal repellents as well, especially when mozzy diseases are around (like we have - Murray Valley Encephalitis and Ross River Fever). DEET based ones are best, but make usre you use child-strength on kids.

So, if camel dung ain't your thing, look at the high tech-solution.

Cheers
Mick

Camel dung, no thanks!!!

I've heard it's good to keep those bug zappers away from the immediate area because they do, of course, attract a lot more critters that would normally be buzzing around. Does the placement really make a difference?

I totally forgot about the bug zapper, duh!

Need to be away from other light sources, to be best effective. Don't hang them under the double fluoro.

They may attract more moths and stuff, but shouldn't attract more mozzies, as the mozzies are mainly attracted by heat rather than light. The zappers don't generate a lot of heat (less than a lightbulb). But once the mozzie are near, and see that wonderful light....

Clothing is also important to prevent mozzie bites. It may be macho to swim with only jocks on, but it's also mozzie bait. My son has a full trunk lycra swimsuit that helps keeps the beasties off. As well as his own roll-on Aeroguard.

Like I said, if viral disease carried by mozzies are a problem, or even malaria, then a DEET-based personal repeelent is a must, as well as local measure to keep numbers down (like, no open containers of water for them to breed in). If ya live near a swamp, unless the local council treats it, ya can't do much about them except cover up and use repellent and zappers.

But prevention is much better than repellent for mozzies.

Cheers
Mick

Hmm... not all bug zappers work as well with mozzies.

Here.

Didn't know that.

Mine is marketed as a mozzie/insect zapper, so must have more than just the light. I'll have to check it out.

Cheers
Mick

Rather then poisoning him with chemicals, teach him that raw garlic cloves are the newest thing to eat since M+M's (and naturally repel mosquito's)...

Maybe you can get Tyler's Mombo to dip the garlic in chocolate---it would sure fool me---YUMMY!
*Bonus!--- garlic is beneficial in many other ways as well...
A raw clove aday is supposed to do wonders!
