5th? 6th? 7th? demensions???

i was talking to my physics teacher today about demensions beyond the 3rd. she said time was the 4th demension which i already knew but she said there were also demensions beyond that. but she couldnt remember what they were. i thought this was very interesting. does anybody know what the demensions beyond the 4th are?

Well it depends really. Mainly from the person beliefs: some physicists believe there are only 6 dimensions, others 10, 11 or even 26!!

The theory of six dimensions is pretty interesting: Since time is the fourth dimension, Space-Time is considered to be the fifth one.

Though since Space time is curved, we require another dimension to explain it.

but shouldnt the 1st 2nd and 3rd make up space? and the 4th is time, so why would a combo of 1,2,3, and 4 be a separate demension?

well thats how they categorized it. Don`t know what to tell other than you have to take the first 4 dimensions as single ones: I mean 1st is 1, 2nd is 2...and so on. The fifth one is the 4th one (time) plsu the three we know about ( first 3).

It's been postulated that to make sense of quantum mechanics there should theoretically be 10 dimensions.

7 are easy. From what I remember you have the three spatial dimensions, plus you have velocities corresponding to each, so that's six. Then time is the 7th. That's just a theory unfortunately. Our puny little minds can't grasp anything beyond spatial, really.

yeah, i can barely grasp the fact that time is the 4th(or 7th, whatever). theoretical physics is very interesting but it makes your head want to explode!

That was great book!

Here's another one that gets into the same thing towards the end of the book

Through a Universe Darkly by Marcia Bartusiak

Anything else describing models of the universe will get into multitude of dimensions!

Sure we can imagine it; we just can't visualize it. I can kind of visualize four dimensions, but after that things get weird. But doing geometry or math in higher dimensions doesn't require visualizing it, just working out the implications. That's imagining it, at least on a practical level.

You don't need to see some things to understand them. The first proof that you can turn a sphere inside out in a smooth operation without kinking the surface was devised by a mathematician who was blind from birth.
