Gamblers Try to Hold Casinos Responsible

Fox News

"Casinos cannot come into this state and just take advantage of a bunch of sick people," said his attorney, Terry Noffsinger.

When it was all over, he had squandered about $175,000 and had to file for bankruptcy.

Williams' lawsuit claims the casino should have done more to keep him out. The casino counters that Williams was the cause of his own problems.

"You shouldn't sue McDonald's claiming they're responsible for your obesity problems," said Patrick Shoulders, Casino Aztar's lawyer. "Fundamentally, problem gamblers have to take responsibility for their own actions."

What are your feelings regarding this issue,
Does the person have accountability for his actions?
Is the casion responsible for the problem?

My opinion:
To put this bluntly, no one forced him to walk into that casino and spend his money. He is responsible for his actions and should be held accountable for them, not try to blame his problems onto someone else.I live 5 miles from two casion's and have been to each one once.

Exactly, I use to work at one and there are indeed some very sick people...
There was one lady that had squandered away every penny of her kids college money, and the typical borrowed from all of her friends etc... but yet she was there...
On the give dollar tokens no less
Couldnt' be nickles!!

His fault, he should of realized he needed help and done something about it before it came to this.
What about the couple other million people that lost all their money in the casinos? They gonna be allowed to sue to?
The problem may come in that if the judge has his nose stuck up his... (<---- see avatar ) and doesn't like casino's he base judgement on that even though he's not supposed to.

Hmmmm? Maybe I should sue my college for allowing me to sit in the student union playing cards instead of going to class.

He's a victim. I'm a victim. We're all victims!!!

Wonder how long it will be before a lawyer sues the government for not doing more to discourage him from filing frivolous lawsuits?

With all the unemployed lawyers out there, it's just a matter of time before lawyers start suing people for not filing enough suits to keep all the lawyers employed.

As for the "victim" of the casinos, his "sickness" is no different than an alcoholic's. Should all alcoholics be allowed to sue the liquor companies?

No, liquor companies should sue alcoholics for besmirching their reputation.

Most lawsuits like this are really about one group of lawyers arranging for their employer to give large sums of money to another group of lawyers. The actual plaintiff gets very, very little.

When the judge gets physical ailments, stress of listening, who is he gonna sue?Maybe he will sue the person that brought the suit, and the cycle continues.

In general, I agree with everyone. But let me toss this out. Bars are held liable for serving intoxicated patrons who have lost their sense of judgement. Do casino's have a similar responsibility to a degree? I guess the argument is which personal addictions require outside intervention. A cloudy area.

ok then...how can smokers sue tobacco companies...when we have know full well that cigarettes cause lung disease for at least 30 years. people claim that the execs knew they were addictive, but so is gambling. i think that a precedent was set with the tobacco companies and this guy will win.

i wholeheartedly believe that you should take responsibility for your own actions. and i dont think he should get anything...except maybe some help at the Gamblers Anon meeting.
