Bad weather here, I heard a tornado.
I was at a customers doing some poking around in preparation to re-working some gas, water and drain hookups when his mom called and said a tornado was coming. I live about 5 minutes away so I jump in the van , call home on the way, the tornado sirens start wailing. Get home, everyone is in the basement. All my emergency stuff is out and ready . So we sit, listen to the tv. Its getting closer and we are in the path from the reports being given. A friend from the fire station 2-way nextels me and says dispatch radio reports one on the ground not far from here. (By my fav Home Depot) Power goes out, my battery operated lights come on. Fire up the lantern . Turn on the am radio . Listening....finally I go to my walkout basement door and look out. My neighbor pokes his head out too. Light rain...then a sound ....north , going west to east , not too far away. I'm straining to look at the sky..nothing , trying to see thru the trees in the woods behind the house, nothing. A dull roar , like thunder that doesn't stop. We look at each other , mouths open. What did we hear, we say? Back into the house.
Later I hear from on-duty friends that it passed about a mile north skipping along. Lots of damage. We were without power from about 4 until 10. But we are ok, lucky. Spooked a little.Thankful though.

I think at least 1 person for sure and possibly 2 were killed. Thats really all I know so far, lots of damage . Now that I have power I'll watch the news. That cnn article does mention Clay County which is where I am.

Sounds like a rough time. Glad to hear you are ok. We were just issued this: Quote:

DUE TO FAVORABLE WINDS ALOFT...SOME OF THE THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SEVERE. THEREFORE...THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OKLAHOMA HAS PLACED THE ENTIRE REGION UNDER A RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.

Whoa. Close call there. Twisters are no fun at all. Especially at night when you can't even see them coming.
Glad you and yours are OK.

Finally got word that my relatives in Belton and Overland Park (KC area) are OK. One's a fire chief, and I imagine he's pretty busy.
Like Sweeper said, we're supposed to be in for it later today.

Glad to hear you're OK fyxxer. Got hit pretty hard down here in SE Kansas yesterday as well. While watching FOX news chase a tornado in a news helicopter(?!) through the KC area we got warnings here. One hit Girard, Kansas about 10 miles from me in Pittsburg, Kansas. A second storm swept through and I watched a funnel start to form and dissipate directly above my house from my balcony. Ran so fast from the balcony to the basement that I looked like Ben Johnson on Winstrol V! Carried my wife on my shoulder. It dropped down a few minutes later and wiped out Franklin, Kansas-a very small town- and went on to hit Mulberry, Kansas and then Liberal, Missouri. Several in the area as another hit west of us and 2 more in SW Missouri. Hit Carl Junction, Missouri pretty hard(2 miles north of Joplin, Missouri). Pretty scary afternoon/evening. Living in "tornado alley" you expect to see tornados this time of year but not quite this large of an outbreak.
