Tunnel to get access to Washington Monument?

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/05/02....ap/index.html

At the moment you get a ticket, stand in line and walk right up to the monument. If you're not going inside, you can just sit outside and rest against it if you want w/o any tickets. They're proposing a 500 foot tunnel to get access to it now to 'thwart terrorism'. I can understand adding a piece to allow for security screening but 500 foot of tunnel to get into it?

That may save the monument from an attack, but it won't save lives. Victims will just die in the tunnel instead of in the monument.

At least it saves on burial expenses.
