Good heavens, Surreal...if I was you I'd be so happy I wouldn't be able to do anything sensible...

I love that design! Plus, you'll have two mantlepieces to hang pictures on! You can pick one side for your preference, and Fingers can put something of his own preference on the other!

By golly, this bi-radial design concept just works and works. Few opportunities to disagree on!

Especially when one considers you'll likely have those cast-iron pans in the kitchen....OUCH!

Yep, that designer is one smart fella!

Well lets see, Hotwheels on one side, and AOL Cds turned shiny side out on the other, boy that would be one nice mantle there surreal

I like it.I have a fireplace but it is stuck in a corner and is really no use,it doesn't give out much heat, but that is a cool design.Enjoyable from 2 rooms.Great idea IMO

Yep that's the view from the kitchen looking into the living room. The mantels are going to be old quarter sawn Oak from an old barn. About 5' x 9"wide and 6" thick. I'm just going to give it a light sanding and a clear coat.

OOH! OOOH! **hand waving frantically**

Quarter-sawn oak has these incredible "ray flakes" that bisect the grain. If you go with a darker stain or dye, they will show up, as these "ray flakes" don't take the stain.

So what you get is this incredible articulation of this type of wood, and Quarter sawn Oak is the only wood that this can make this statement. But you have to treat it to make it a little darker.

Surreal, I have a secret formula for an Analine dye that you can mix up and treat it, it's kinda reddish, and when you lay the final finish on it, I swear, you will simply not believe the beauty of it!

I'll be happy to send it to you. Quarter sawn oak, especially old stuff, is a real treasure!
