losing your land line?

watching the tube yesterday and i saw a cricket commercial where they say something like get rid of your house phone you dont need it get a cricket phone.

my first thought was what the crap. this is their selling point??? who is stupid enough to get rid of their home line. and why in the world would you want to???

well at work today, i got 2 calls about DSL asking if it goes through the telephone line. they want to get rid of the phones! they didnt want DSL cuz they want to get rid of their telephone lines.

REASONS FOR KEEPING YOUR LANDLINE: answering machine, telemarketers, no batteries, can't lose it, emergencies, etc

any one have a case for getting rid of your landline???

I just have a cell phone. It's cheaper than my land line was. I don't use the phone that much so for me it's cheaper. With the land line I was paying extra for voice mail. caller ID etc. stuff that is included with my cell phone. As for the other reasons I have a cable modem so I don't need it for my internet connection plus alot less telemarketers call me now which is a good thing

ha, the strangest thing occured when i read your post maface, i realized i know 2 people that do the same thing as you. that is weird that i didnt realize it, i think that cricket commercial made it seem like it was trying to appeal to just families. i think it would be a SMART move for single, or possibly even couples, but not families.

answering machine
-- voicemail on cell phone

telemarketers
-- this is a reason to keep your land line?

no batteries
-- you can keep most cell phones plugged in while talking so you dont' have to worry about the battery dying

can't lose it
-- don't lose it

emergencies
-- emergencies wherever you go regardless if you're at home a cell phone is great unless you live in the boonies w/ no service at all (I've taken my phone way out in the boonies and at least analog almost always works)

i mean at one point or another you are going to have to give someone your phone number. now do you really want them to be calling your cell phone? i see cells as either for personal or business. misc goes to landline.

I wish someone would build an interface that would operate your cell phone from where your outside box is and give your inside phones (now cellular) the same "feel" of a land line! Plus you would only need a directional antenna so reception should be pretty good if you are in range.

What is probably slowing this down is that the land line companies are owning the cellular companies now, and don't want hard lines replaced by cellular. Plus the same line now in many cases is selling you a $ 30 phone line and a $50 DSL on the same (wire) investment!

Too much invested to have people going off the reservation.

I still have my landline. Heck, I have dsl with it. I don't care for caller ID, if telemarketers call I threat them, then they leave me alone.

Plus with a g/f you tend to talk for a couple of hours a day, lol.

Also I need it for my business. I don't like cell phones. I carry a pager, and I can call back those who I choose to call back without having the line tied up and them knowing i'm on the phone no really, if somoene is on a cell phone and you call them, you will hear a third ring in the background or a muffled beep.

I have an answering machine so I don't have to pic up the phone all the time or rush for it

Aren't landlines more secure than wireless?

Saw it on TV, lots drug dealers use land lines, saying wireless is not safe.

911 service - you dial 911 on a cell - they can only figure out your general area. call 911 on a landline - they know exactly where you are.

911 - saved my buddy's life when the heart attack hit. He dialed 911 and then hit the floor.
