This could be revolutionary

this has been rather understated lately, but i think it has the possibility of changing the entire way music works, and at least maybe reconcile the recording companies and the internet. Even if this specific incarnation doesn't take off, it at least may open the door for others. i really hope this works.

That would be pretty nifty for broadband people. At $.99 a song, that's cheaper than most CDs, plus you don't have to buy the crappy songs if you don't want them. Downside being you don't get the cover booklet and stuff, which I'm a freak about.

Better be better than 128kbps though. Low quality MP3s eat.

I think its more evolutionary than revolutionary, everyone cept the RIAA can see that this is one of the few ways out for them...

About the 128kbps...

The songs they have for download aren't mp3's. They are the new ACC format for mp4. They give much higher quality for the same bit rate.

I'll be trying this out on one of my macs in a few hours. I hope it works well...

Sweet. I'll have to look into that. I have encode at at least 192kbps or I hear some aweful chorusing in the highs. Drives me insane.

jobs gave a keynote on this around lunchtime which rubikcube and i watched. he went into a lot of detail on this and one of the things he mentioned was that it was all encoded at 128 AAC mp4 format, so really it's about equal to cd quality. also each rip was made from the original master tapes, not the cd. so that way you aren't getting a copy of a copy, just a copy.

i agree GB. it seems to be the natural flow for music, i jsut hope the RIAA does wise up to this. i would think they would since, obviously, apple had to get the cooperation from the recording studios to even do this.

only time will tell i guess

I have friends who have thousands of mp3's.
do the math: 1000 mp3's x $0.99 = $999.

First the industry sued and killed Napster because it was on a central system. then P2P programs popped up. RIAA can't touch those. then the music industry tried to introduce non-rippable music discs(i ran into a few of those) but that was a no go.

This may appease the RIAA now, but illegal music swapping will never end, IMO.

yeah its is a good idea but i have to agree with Craigk, people will still go after free music instead of paying 99 cents per song.

Depending on the quality of the recording, I would pay. Im not gonna let my sound system go to waste on 128kps mp3s.

What are you talking about discreet?? 128kps songs are great quality. i even have a few that are in the 90's and still sound good. either you find the mp3's ripped by retards or you don't know how to tune your sound system to make the best out of the songs oyu have.

on another note, is this mp4 format coming out soon? and what will be the big difference from theose and the current mp3's?
