Any gardeners here?

I'm looking to plant my first garden this year and don't really have a clue what I'm doing. I have about a 12' x 12' square of really nice soil that I am going to rototill this weekend. Things I'm lookin to plant are:

Tomatoes
Onions
Various Peppers
Garlic
Asparagus
Various herbs

Is that too much to pack into my small area? I think if I just do a row of each it will be good. Anybody have any good links for general info on growing this stuff? Have any secrets you'd like to share? Thanks

Check out Mel's site for squarefoot gardening tips---
http://www.squarefootgardening.com/
Dig a bunch of good compost in while tilling---
Asparagus takes a couple years to grow (I think?) and will take up alot of precious space during that time---
Some things are cheap to buy later on in the store (garlic/onions) but you know yours will taste BETTER!
I like starting from transplants, but starting seeds in flats will save alot of money---
I grow tomato's (mostly)--- peas, greenbeans, eggplant, zuchini, corn (YUM!), crookneck squash, radish, hashplant X northernlights etc...

TKOP, I did some searching on asparagus, and I think it's a bit more than I want to get into right now I like the square foot idea. That looks like it would work great. Also checked out seeds for some of the plants you mentioned. Prices are a bit high for my taste lol

Sweet, thank you for the very generous offer. I think what I am worried most about is timing. I need to research when to plant what I want. I'm not sure if I should start now with seeds or if I should wait and buy some small plants to use. What way would you recommend?

Both---buy heirloom seeds local to you and get some experience planting---keep an eye out at the local suppliers for transplants that interest you and plant according to area needed maximizing space---learn how long it takes your plant to reach maturity so you can double and triple plant in your growing cycle harvesting many times---
Remember the compost---its the most important thing you can do no matter how good you think your soil may be---
Get involved with your community---there are many community efforts often offering free plants and seeds let alone information about growing in your area---
For special interest plants get clones from your Michigan friends---they know best...
And above all---garden organically if possible :-)

a great source of information is from your local agricultural agent, yes they do exist. may take some phone calls to find em. The King gives ya some real good advice too. A hint, if the seedling starters for veges are available at the local garden center, it's about time to plant em.

Talk to the people at a big reputable garden center.
I had a gardening thread a bit ago, it was here....http://www.techimo.com/forum/t60736.html

If memory serves me, I think Mich. State has the big ag school program.

Start with a few transplants for the tomatoes and peppers. Seeds for the cukes, squash, corn, basil.

Tomatoes - determinate v. indeterminate varieties.... One will stay small and bushy, the other will need 6 foot stakes. The way I remember is that the determinate varieties are determined to stay small, thus bush type, though they may benefit from some staking too.

for onions, I'd go with the onion sets. growing from seed takes forever.

Do you have a feed store anywhere nearby? They can help alot!!

keep those questions coming!!! May not hurt to get a soil test done when starting out.....

Good Luck....
