Kids What is it about pets?

I have never been a *pet kind of person. I always kinda felt like they were an awful lot of trouble...

A few months back I "inherited" a green parrot from an old fella moving into a nursing home. He felt he could no longer care for the animal himself and my wife said "yes" before I could stop her. So the parrot moved in. She's messy and tempermental at times, but I find that I'm picking the darn thing up as soon as I get home!

She dances around the top of the cage when she sees me, speaks a few phrases and whistles back at me. She also chews holes in my shirt, craps at the most inopportune times, and requires constant maintenance. So what gives? Have I finally lost my marbles?

*The only real exception was the occasional hamster. Knothead and many others may recall the adventures of Harvey, Private Hamster. Now THAT was real excitement!

Im a big pet person. sure, theres the responsibility of keeping their messes clean, but if I could have a pet here Id definately have a cat or even a small dog. Birds are cool, but yeah, they're really messy. We had 2 pairs of lovebirds, a pair of parakeets, and a cockatiel. Talk about a mess! That and if one bird would start screeching then the rest of them would start. They were fun though.

you ever play the sims? Its the same type of thing (cept the sims never say thanks ). Its gotta be a piece of internal code in us that wants that "your my world" type of love, or something. They are always there, low maintance relationship wise, and will love you to death if you just feed them everyday! I mean try just feeding your wife everyday the same thing. See how long she stays with you animals are one of the strangest yet greatest blessings I've known

I got home from work the other day and my Lab was standing at the carport door jumping up and down and generally delited to see me.

I walked in the house and asked my wife "why don't you act like that when I come home?" She failed to see the humor in it.

I don't know about other pets cause I've never had cats or birds but dogs love you unconditionally. It doesn't matter if you don't look good or are popular. Something about that kind of affection just melts your heart.

I hate birds they're SOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD!!! arghhhh

I like BIG dogs, grew up with several great danes
Although would love to have a basset hound again

I like cats as well, alwasy grew up with a LOT of animals in the house (birds, cats, dogs, fish.. even an odd iguana/rat/ferrett here and there)
I hate not having a pet at my current residence, but I wouldnt' be able to spend a lot of time with them anyways, so best not having a pet at all at the moment they'd just be lonely.

I like that, that's very admirable vass. So many people get pets and don't take those things into account. Or usually they're just totally oblivious to that aspect of pet ownership. They treat their pets as if they are inanimate objects, and as long as the animal is locked up in the house or confined to the back yard then they think it's perfectly ok to be gone 10-12 hours a day or more…everyday. No, it's not really ok. And in such situations people should either have the intelligence and compassion (like vass) to not own pets. Or the very least they could do is have multiples of that type of pet so at least the animals can keep each other company when the owner's gone.

I've known people that would routinely leave their pet in very isolated situations (like in their garage, or a small section of their backyard) for way too long of periods. 2 and 3 day weekends. It's not right. And the type of person I am, I have absolutely no qualms at all about telling someone the truth in a situation like that. Needless to say I've lost a few "friends" over the subject. I'd just look them right in the eye and very matter-of-factly tell them the truth, "You should not own animals."

I always approached the subject very calmly, non-confrontational but also just brutally honest. But boy oh boy, people do NOT like to hear that phrase. They immediately get super defensive and often even aggressive. Well, that's too bad. I do my best to "call'em like I see'em". And if someone's behavior is resulting in undue anguish or even outright cruelty to an animal then that's a call I'm going to make every single time I see it. No exceptions. Friends, strangers, family, even bosses (to my own peril).

And on the flip side of that, when someone shows good judgment by not owning a pet, even though they may want to, because they wouldn't have the time to give the animal the attention it needs…well, I'm gonna make that call every single time as well. And thus this big'ol long, wordy, message just to make sure you know I'm very sincere when I say "Atta-boy vass!"

----

I wouldn't say I "hate" them, but I can do without the loud squakers as well.

Marcia acquired Carmen about 35 years ago when a friend went on vacation and left Carmen with her. Carmen was so mad at the friend when he finally returned that Carmen wound up living with Marcia.

She [Carmen, not Marcia] is truly evil but we love her anyway.

Yes, of course, you're crazy. So?

I love dogs,I have 4 of them, and yes they are just like family. They have better manners than some of the family
