To go or not to go...
...that is the question.
We have hotel and plane reservations for a conference in Toronto in late June. Everything is already paid for including the conference. Now the WHO is advising against trips to Toronto. But unless the State Department issues a travel restriction, we'll get stuck losing a tidy sum by cancelling.
This stinks.

I assume this is not work-related?
I'm not an reactionist, but given a choice, I'd stay away. If you call the airline and hotel, it's very likely you could get your money back. Or possibly get a voucher from the airline. With the current climate, they're being much more accomodating than usual.

This is work related for my g/f. In fact, she's presenting at the conference. Still, I'm questioning the sense of taking that risk. A packed conference hall would be a great place to spread something like that around.

Exactly. Which is why I wouldn't go.
It's a shame, Toronto's conference business is going to be hurt by this. But it's better than seeing any more spread of this disease.

My guess is that by late June, the Canadian part of the epidemic will be well under control. If it isn't, I can practically guarantee that the epidemic will be here, too, and there won't be any reason not to travel, because the risk will be the same in both places.

| That's what we're hoping. And if it isn't by that time, maybe the State Department will have issued a restriction and we'll be off the hook for the money.

Have you looked into getting your money back? I don't think under the circumstances it would be that hard. I wouldn't wait until the last minute hoping for the best.
Our company policy right now is to disallow travel to the far east and Toronto. Anyone who is there on company business must stay home for two weeks after they return. And anyone considering personal travel to these areas will likely be asked to take two weeks unpaid (ouch!).

My sister's just completed her week's vacation in Vancouver and Victoria last week. She only talked about all the good times she had there. She even brought me a canadian made canada shirt. Seems nothing went on there.

This is the biggest library conference of the year and my g/f is scheduled to present, so cancelling is not a decision made lightly. Guess we'll wait and see.
Thanks all.
