Will Oregon allow self-serve gas?

Oregon State Represetentative Randy Miller has introduced legislation to end Oregon's ban on self-service gasoline and give motorists the option to pump their own gas, to bring his state in line with the 48 other states that allow consumers to fill their own tanks

Of course, the wisdom of this move will be lost on NJ state legislators, who don't bother with legislation that doesn't involve "revenue enhancement."

It's hard to say whether they will pass this or not.

The main people against "self-serve" claim that it would sky-rocket the unemployment rate in the state (OR already has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation).

What these people don't realize is that it will actually have little impact on the unemployment since they will still have to have attendants for cash collection and security. Most of the stations I've seen or been to in OR, have 1-2 attendants on duty now, they'll still need 1-2 on duty if the law passes.

Sad, is the fact that I pumped gas for 12 years, while growing up in my Dad's service station, but according to the state of OR, I'm unqualified to pump my own gas!

Ahhhh! I think I get it now. We will keep an inefficient process in place to keep employment up. Perhaps they should get rid of snow plows and have the highways shoveled by hand.

Perhaps they could not allow those big cement mixers to drive down the road, only allow us to move concrete with those little yellow bags and we will build skyscrapers with wheel barrels an hoes mixing the footings.

I hate logic like that.

sorry.

I also love my pay at the pump down here in virginia and north carolina. some even accept cash. 95% of all gas stations are 24 hours based on that little advent.

You never say oh crud I need gas bad and it is 2:30 am crud what am I going to do none of the stations round here are big enough to pump 24 hours.

I wouldn't mind the self-serve ban as much if the guys that pump the gas had an IQ greater than the pump itself. I just like using an ATM card and very few know how to run the ATM machines. Can you imagine that? These guys cannot run an ATM machine!!!

BTW, most petroleum producers, who have no stake in whether this passes or not, favor eliminating the ban.

There's a town in Massachusetts that will not allow people to pump their own gas. I could be wrong but I believe it is an insurance issue

I've driven from the Bay Area to Seattle and back many many times. Every time I make the trip I stop at the last town before entering Oregon and fill up...my 12 gallon tank is just enough to take me through Oregon without having to stop for gas once. The less time spent in Oregon, the better.

That is one whacked state. Did you know in Oregon it's legal to ride a bicycle on the shoulder of the freeway? Whacked I tell ya.
