Kids Home Theater question

Ok I have a wide-screen HD TV I have an older Techniques receiver (Dolby surround sound, 2 main channels (A and B) and one set of back speakers). I am now in the market for a DVD player.

I have narrowed the DVD player down to what I want it to have and do, but was out window shopping and came across another idea that I need to find out about.

OK, here we go. Is it worth it to go and buy a DVD with home theater speakers (5.1) and if I do this can I use those speakers for my receiver (I do not want two sets of speakers LOL). That is the main question? The other thoughts would be buy a 5.1 out DVD and use as is until I get another 5.1 receiver, or buy a DVD player and use my system and then when I get another receiver buy new speakers and stuff…

Any thoughts or ideas???

Txs

The speakers that you get for 5.1 surround would be a center channel, 2 front channel, 2 rear channel, and a subwoofer. You current reciever has no way of powering all those speakers properly. Speakers intended for use in 5.1 surround systems generally do not have the capability to project much bass, and rely on the separate subwoofer for that. Your current receiver probably doesn't have the capability to power that subwoofer, and you will be left with a bunch of little speakers with no bass. Stick with your current system until you can afford to get the reciever and speakers together, or upgrade your receiver first (it will be able to power your old speakers just fine in standard Dolby Surround mode), and then the speakers so you can enjoy the full effect of 5.1 surround.

Oh, and make sure that you buy a progressive scan DVD player, so that you can take full advantage of the HD TV that you have. Yes, they are more expensive but the enhanced picture quality will be more than worth it.

Absolutely! Go with a progressive scan DTS-compatible DVD player with a HD-compatible TV. The 69.95 ones don't cut it anymore.

I upgraded to the "progressive scan" and the difference was dramatic. I have a 40" Sony Wega and took the HDTV package from my cable co. Not a lot of HD broadcasting yet but the quality is amazing.

The price of all of these equipment has done down dramatically. There is no reason not to get progressive scan and 5.1. BTW, also make sure it has DTS. You won't be able to take advantage of the 5.1 but the prologic will still work. When you upgrade your receiver, you will get those benefits.

I did that a few years ago and got a B&K AVR 202. No regrets. Next, I need to get a large screen since my sound is way bigger than the picture. I'm looking at the either the Hitachi or Toshiba 65" wide-screen models.
