The speakers that you get for 5.1 surround would be a center channel, 2 front channel, 2 rear channel, and a subwoofer. You current reciever has no way of powering all those speakers properly. Speakers intended for use in 5.1 surround systems generally do not have the capability to project much bass, and rely on the separate subwoofer for that. Your current receiver probably doesn't have the capability to power that subwoofer, and you will be left with a bunch of little speakers with no bass. Stick with your current system until you can afford to get the reciever and speakers together, or upgrade your receiver first (it will be able to power your old speakers just fine in standard Dolby Surround mode), and then the speakers so you can enjoy the full effect of 5.1 surround.
Oh, and make sure that you buy a progressive scan DVD player, so that you can take full advantage of the HD TV that you have. Yes, they are more expensive but the enhanced picture quality will be more than worth it.
