42% of Americans do not use the internet

Forty-two percent of Americans still don't use the Internet and the majority of them do not believe they ever will, according to a study released yesterday.

Wonder if they did an online survey?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2003Apr16.html

Here are some interesting facts from this survey:
1. Half of the people not using the Internet are over 50 years old.
2. 40 percent of white Americans are nonusers, as are 55 percent of African Americans and 46 percent of English-speaking Hispanics.
3. Forty-one percent of nonusers have a yearly household income below $30,000.
4. 25% of them did not graduate from high school.
5. A fifth of nonusers live in houses that are connected to the Net.

My parents have steadfastly refused to accept a PC from me. They have no interest at all. I say, whatever makes them happy.

Of that 42%, 97% of them were AOL users and had no idea they were NOT using the internet <LOL>.

I'd say income is a big thing... PC's while cheap are still very expensive when you're struggling to buy food let alone a 500 dollar PC.. even the real cheap ones are some people's money to live on for a few months.
While some of us (Not me ) would be willing to forgo food for internet.. well some people just have strange priorities

Three out of four of my immediate family's oldest generation have computers and access the internet. The other one, my father-in-law, is your typical "don't need no stinkin' internet" type.

Yes, plus there is also the sociological aspect of poor folks, i.e., struggling to earn a living, attendant degraded lifestyle, friends who are equally ignorant of this (computer) jazz...

To tell you the truth, that 42% statistic is mind-boggling!

That means that 58% of Americans ARE on the 'net?!?

This is astonishing. If this is true, then we are looking at a revolution that absolutely DWARFS the impact of television. I had no idea. I would have estimated something like, say, 30%.

No comparison. Where is Marshall ("The Medium Is The Message") McLuhan when we need him?

I am SHOCKED. What an amazing statistic. Whew!

USA is quite in the lead concerning internet. My country seems to be on the top 5 in internet per population, US is still #1.

I got my parents hooked up to internet 2 years ago. Strange how they find their way on the net on their own lately.
