Before I unleash my rage....

Should I call a company that sold me a MB combo last year that was supposed to be a 1.4 Ath processor and In actuality it was an overclocked processor????

It always overheated and was eventually turned off for good because of it....

When I put the cpu in another computer it read 1050 mhz!#@$$!

Should I go ahead and post it on resellerratings...or call them up first and unleash hell on them first???

Hmmm....might there be a possibility that they goofed?

I mean, you contact them first, very CALMLY, and inform them of the..."error"...and give them a chance to make good.

If they screw around with ya THEN, you can blast them and also put their disreputable butts on RR. Eh?

One thing to look at the numbers on the die of the processor.

The speed of the Ath 1.4 G is 133 X 10.5
The speed of an Ath 1.4 running at 100Mhz bus speed is 1050 100X 10.5.

Might want to check the bus speed on your other MB first before flying off the handle.

Especially do a little checking into the details of the processor because of one thing I noticed.

133 x 10.5 = 1396Mhz

100 x 10.5 = 1050Mhz

Are you sure the "test" motherboard (the second one) supports 266 FSB?

EDIT>> Geez I type slow! Bones1 beat me to it

Bones probably hit it---since you have it "in hand" look at it closely, whip out the magnifier---
Where'd you get it? (out of curiosity) id call em and allow them to explain your purchase---have your documentation/sales/order# etc when you make the call...

I'll take a look..

But it seems strange that it always overheated and locked up Windows. He had an awful time installing Win98 on it..

Also....the cpu had a sticker connected to the MB that read "warranty void if removed".... it almost seems like they didn't want you to know what it actually was....

Remember that the 1.33 and 1.4 old school Athlons were a very hot running processor to begin with.

Overheating is prolly more to do with poor cooling, poor contact with HSF, or poor heat conduction to HSF. Athlons can run VERY hot, and need very good cooling even without being o'clocked.

Check your facts first. If you can verify that it's NOT the actual CPU you ordered and paid for, then I'd take it up with the reseller and make them understand you will take it further if not satisfied.

In fact, if they DID sell you a crook CPU, I'd take them to task on it anyway, and report it through RR and other buyer review channels. Give them a chance to investif=ate explain first, though. There may have been some simple mistake made.

IMO. anyway.

Cheers
Mick
