Nobody mentioned this before now?

Anyway, three particularly fun facts about taxes:
1. A Money magazine poll found that 70% of the members of Congress on the two major tax writing committees — House Ways and Means and Senate Finance — cannot figure out their own returns and use professional tax preparers.

2. The first income tax in 1913 required that just 2% of American families complete a tax return. The highest tax rate then was 7%.

3. Businesses will spend about 3.4 billion man-hours and individuals about 1.7 billion hours figuring out their taxes this year. That is the equivalent of 3 million people working full time year-round on tax-preparation work. This is more people than now serve in the U.S. armed forces. It is more man-hours than are required to build every car, van, and truck in the United States.

I went this morning.

I'd really like for income tax to just be abolished - and a flat tax or national sales tax instead

Yeah, but then we'd throw all those tax accountants & lawyers out of work, and the nation would fall into a depression!

Think, if we put every auto worker out of a job! You'd have nationwide chaos!

We need to wean ourselves slowly back to a reasonable tax code.

I say we abolish one tax law every day untill we only have 10 left.

If we start now, it'd be done by about 2345.

Dunno about you, but it took me 6 hours, start to finish, to assemble the data , calculate the taxes (Federal and DC) using TurboTax, print the returns, sign them, write the checks and mail them.

That's still more than I'd like. But I bet my car took a lot more work-hours to manufacture than that. At least I hope so.

I just mailed mine. Man that hurt. I left a company 6 years ago with an outstanding loan on my 401K. They finally caught up with me and I got a 1099 for the balance. In total I was set back over $2000.
