Amended Tax Returns

My company sent me a W-2C (Corrected) and my wages were off my a little bit (original reports earnings were 600 over correct amount). I'm using H&R Block Taxcut 2002. I figured out how to do the Federal Return 1040X (I've already sent in fed return, but not state yet) but I have no idea if I need to do an amendment to state seeing as I havent' turned it in yet.. I'm thinking it would be easier to update my wages on the original from the state portion, but not sure if thats a good idea or not.

(btw, this is in community because its more of a tax question than it is a software question)

Any ideas?
I got a day lol

Two (free) ways to go. First you will need to file an amended return. You can do this by getting forms and directions at the public library, or you can go directly to IRS and ask them to do it for you. They DO work for us don't they?

Everything is so computerised, it's a piece of cake. SSN# + New W2 = Corrected Amount, which has already been filed with your employer. (You are just garnish!)

ya with TaxCut I can fill in the 1099X for the amendment, but do I have to do anything for state?

That's the part that I don't know
Thankfully though, the adjustment wasn't enough to modify my tax return

There will be a similar form for the state also. If you haven't turned in the state form yet, just correct it with white out and attach the W2C instead. They probably all ready have the corrected figures. They have been known to adjust a simple return automatically.

A little off topic...

Funny thing, Big Brother has enough on you that you don't really need to file (at least short form) at all. All you are doing is helping them compare their reports with yours!

Your employer reports your wages
Your bank reports your interest received
Your bank reports your interest paid
IRS has the SSN of your dependants and their ages.
Other income, like dividends, capital gains, unemployment, bonuses, winnings, etc. all generate a 1099 (w2 with no withholding).

As you can see, we really don't need to file except to update our addresses and sign our returns, and see who owes who what!
