New Speakers

I guess I'd like to tell everyone that I'm getting new speakers for my computer. I was moving everything to my new desk and one of the pins on my other speakers (sub) broke (sniff) and no longer works.

Anyway I didn't want the 5.1 surround thing just some nice sounding 2.1's. I talked to our supplier and he said these were a good set. Linky: http://www.alteclansing.com/product_...?pID=621&sID=2

I can't handle listening to my current setup of these half decent Altec Lansing ACS90's no BASS well what can I expect from 3" speakers. Funny thing if I get them loud enough I can actually feel the vibrations from them...

I was looking at some Klipsh and high end Logiech speakers but I didn't like the price.. Too bad Bose doesn't make computer speakers that would be sweet.

Well on the good side my neighbors may like this setup more than I do.. No thump thump thudddd while I play music. Ha that'll change tomorrow.

Jim

You will NOT be disappointed with the AL 621s.

Well, just my opinion.

[cranks up 641s and languishes in the awesomeness]

Hey Whir I take it you have a pair.. I was not sure of these ones. Well then again anything with a sub is better than what I have.

I didn't know what to get.. Everything looks good on paper but I wanted to hear what the diff was for myself.

I'll have to post back when I get these things set up.

I have the 641s, which are the 4.1 surround setup. You have no idea how much bass that sub throws out. Seriously. I have it all the way down to mix well with the FOUR satellites. Usually when I game I crank it up to about the middle and it's unreal.

Granted, I've never been in a Klipsh or Logitech Z system, but Altec has always gotten my vote.

Re: New Speakers

What'd you give for them? Hopefully not anywhere their suggested list price. The manufacturer shows a number of retailers selling those for just a few bucks over $100. Maybe that price list is old or something 'cause that seems pretty high for those speakers.

For the same price ($99) you could have gotten the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system direct from Klipsch. [shrug]

Those 621's don't seem half bad judging by the spec. sheet. However, that 10% THD figure on the spec sheet is really, really ugly. Heck, 1% should be the max! But 10%? That's the kind of number that would immediately disqualify them for me.

But don't let me scare ya. The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is something that only really comes into play when you are pushing the system near it's limits (IOW when it's cranked loud). I'm sure at more reasonable listening levels the speakers will sound great.

I got those speakers today and holy what a difference. The sub is about 15" high and 8" deep. These things really sound good and removable grills to boot.

They sound alot better than my other set (Labtec).

Oh side note these speakers are heavy and have a push button volume and power control (kinda cool no need to turn up the volume.... push up the volume).

Well seeing that I can't crank it up for now. Would be nice to hear what those Kilpsh that Outpatient mentioned sounded like. Oh well I'll never know.

Just to inform anyone looking for a good sounding speaker set not to overlook these puppies. The Altec Lansing 621's. Geez I sound like a commercial.

Why does everyone insist on Bose? I wont start... because Bose owners just insist for whatever reason (maybe to convince themselves that they didnt get suckered) that Bose is the best just because they cost a ridiculous $2k and up. If you want the VERY high end, Paradigm will not disappoint. Bose speakers sound no better than my am/fm clock radio, from first hand experience. Heres a link for ya:

http://www.intellexual.net/bose.htm

As for a 2.1 system, I just bought the Megaworks 550THX. Assuming you want 2.1 for mostly music, the 210's (is that the model? the thx version) are a damn good deal. When I listen to cds, I turn off the surround and even from two satellites, the Megaworks fills up my room with extremely clean sound that goes real high. It hits all the low and high notes without breaking a sweat, most of all they are very pleasing to the ear, music dosent sound too exaggerated. And as for the bass, its very VERY punchy and accurate. Lets just say your neighbors wont be too happy if you decide to spring for this set.

How's that saying go?...

"No highs,
No lows,
Rhymes with blows,
must be Bose"

Very true too. Bose is an entire empire built on one speaker design, the 901's. None of their other speakers impress me at all. In fact most of them are rather disappointing. And even the 901 series can't stand on their own (IMO). They also need a sub to get any kind of satisfying bass without distortion.

I think that 10% must be a misprint. I've had my 641s so loud I couldn't stand it and I didn't get much distortion, other than my eardrums trying to implode.

Personally, I hold Klipsh in the same light as Bose. Pay for the name, not the quality. My buddy got a Klipsh 2.1 setup with an 8" sub and I don't think his sound quality is nearly as good as my 641s. Of course, I'm probably not being objective since I'm an Altech zealot...

BTW, is that you Timmeh?!

I think you're all wet by comparing Klipsch to Bose. With Bose you're paying for the name and usually getting sub-standard equipment bearing that name. With Klipsch you might be paying a little more name as well, but they back it up, with quality components, quality workmanship, fantastic customer service, and probably most importantly, superior speaker design.

I'm sure your ALs sound great...but there's just no way I buy your story that they sound better than a camparible Klipsch system. Maybe your buddy with the Klipsch just has his settings all whacked. Or even just piss-poor placemnt of the speakers. Come on Whir, you know how the smallest things like that can sometimes make or break your listening enjoyment.

But I wanna know how can we be here arguing about speakers without that other guy, MDsomething, jumping in here and trying to cram Logitech speakers down our throats?

(Oh, and that 10% THD on your speakers is listed in multiple places in the official .PDF document listing the specs. [shrug] )
