Ah, to be in Germany again! I loved the autobahns. Nothing like cruising at 140MPH.

Of course, I was only paying $0.27 per liter then. Being in the Army had its bennies.

The BMW 633CSi I had over there would get fair gas mileage until you cranked it over 5k RPM. Then you could actually see the gas gauge dropping.

I'm not sire it was because of the gas level actually dropping, M... sounds like it could have been dus to the massive G force from accelerating!

I miss the autobahn too! most i ever went tho was 200 kliks (120 MPH) Fun stuff! It was in a rented Audi.

Dropping gauges ...

way back in 1978 I was transferring a Chevy Caprice from LA to San Antonio and I felt that the gauge was visibly dropping at any speed which though despite of a quite restrained budget did nor matter that much as if I remember right a gallon was in the fourties or so.

CC.

PS.: This 635 is/was really nice A good one is still @ appr. $7000.

EPA says:

You should also remember that air drag is a big influence. That is why driving at 55 is so much more economical than at 65. At 65 MPH as much as HALF of the gas burned is used to overcome wind friction/drag.

Depends on the vehicle. I think 55-60 on the freeway in a new car is prolly the optimal for gas mileage, as that's the way they are setup at the factory

Could be wrong though

I have a mileage computer on my car. I get 40 mpg at like 35 to 40 mph. While at 65 I get 19 mpg.

The difference being mainly in wind resistance. The faster you go the harder the air resists being simply pushed asside

In a vaccum with a 100 hp car and enough gears you could go any speed you would like 300 mph with out a problem. What saps up your HP and fuel is wind resistance at higher speeds.

And air resistance increases as the square of the speed, so at 60 mph it's four times as great as at 30, at 75 it's six and a quarter times as great, and at 90 it's nine times as great.

Hmm, vacuum = no air. No air = no combustion. No combustion = no go. Even if you had NASCAR's best in a vacuum you couldn't move an inch without pushing.

Sorry, Ep. Just couldn't let that one slide.
