anyone know how to check a timing chain on a 90 cavalier 3.1 v6.
Normally you take off dist. cap,and turn crankshaft in both directions to see how much slack is in the chain.
This car has no dist. So is there a way to check it without taking the timing cover off?

I hate this car

No real way to check without taking off the cover, Most of them have a spring or hydraulic loaded tensioner to keep the tension on.

Is the cover that hard to get to?

If it's under 150,000 miles I doubt you have a bad timing chain... What are the symptoms....? If you do believe it is the timing chain, you will probably have to pull it apart to diagnose it or you can set the #1 piston to TDC and check and see where the timing mark is.

I drove it in the shop.Changed the transmission, waterpump, plugs, wires, and ECM.And now it won't start
I have had it on the machine to check injectors, and electrical, sensors and ect, everything is working. It's getting fuel, spark, and has a ton of compression, so in theroy it has to be timing.IMO
Flashed trouble codes got a 12 which is all clear.
Now like a dummy I should have started it after each thing was changed but I didn't. But I have done this a thousand times, so I didn't figure it was a big deal.
Plugs are gapped correctly.Changed plug wires one at a time, so I know each one is in the correct place, I have checked firing order 10x, it's right.
All fuses are good, it should start.
Unless the thing jumped time when I shut it off,and now it won't start. I guess it's not impossible, but very unlikely.
Any ideas??

I hate this car

I think I'll stick a plug wire in the fuel line

My son-in-law has one of those POS v-6 Caviliers & the dang thing is impossible to work on. I think they were built at the North Pole by tiny little elves.

Is there wiring going to the tranny? (Of course there is )
Might have pinched a wire or have a loose connection.

Did you have to pull any fuel lines? Bleed air from the injection sys ?

Do the cylinders even "pop" when you turn it over? Any backfire at all?

Check the crank trigger/wire? Did coolant get all over the crank position sensor when you pulled the water pump?

BTW, a timing chain can snap in a heartbeat.

If you unscrew the oil filler cap & crank it over, can you see the cam turn?

If it has compressin, then your timing should be ok. What are the specs...160 PSI ????? Check ALL the connnections to the computer and see if anything got grounded during the previous installations. Probably something real simple but overlooked. Good Luck!!!!!

Can't see the rockers through the filler cap,I did bleed the injectors, even added gas just to make sure.
No pinched wires, crank position wire is in place also
No pops, backfire nothing, stone cold dead.Maybe I should take it out of the case........Oh sorry
Pickel I have even taken the computer back and exchanged it for a different one.The original one was bad, I had it on a diag. machine. But the diag. machine says everything is working

I wish it had points and a carb

I drove this thing in the shop last week, It can't be anything major
