Syracuse, NY

Does anyone have a familiarity with the Syracuse, NY area? If so, what do you think? Nice area? Plenty to do, places to see? What about industry? I would appreciate any opinions you may have on the entire area.

LOTS of snow. Loooong winters.

Otherwise, it's a nice place. Big college town.

I've only driven through it on numerous (ok ok.. LOTS) of occasions, but seems like a nice area. They have a fair sized mall that looks pretty new so sounds like a growing area. You're only about .. maybe an hour or two from Niagra falls / canadian border too. Maybe 3 or 4 from Toronto.. not sure how far from NYC.

Also I just drove through their major highway (81) through the center of town at 5pm and hardly got below 50mph
Try that around DC!

I have an uncle who lives there and runs a Business from there. The place is pretty cool... nice area with a mixture of the city and the suburbs. The town is pretty clean and is not over populated... great people too.
In fact, I'll be driving down there next week

It's really nice during the summer season, which lasts from August 7 until August 8.

Besides New York City, New York is one of those states that I don't know much about.
Actually I do know they have fairly brutal winters.

Winter snowfalls can be like White Outs.

Near the Lake area of NY.

Great and underated University, once a major upper-class school for NY's industrial rich kids. Hence, has Endowment and a Syracuse Club in NYC.

Good college basketball team [Orange] in Eastern Division One. Enemy of St. John's [RedStorm], NYC.

Western NY where it is located is both scenic--and poor.

Get's Canada/Pennsylvania weather in Winter. Survives on University and tourism. Not an industrial center like some NY upstate cities.

Housing is cheap -- by NYC eyes. Old Victorian houses..little skyline.

Never been there, but da Boos CaaT [impressions above de CaaT] did some research in the University Library. Train ride back "like Ice Station Zebra". Doors froze open, so snow was coming in to train cars! COOL !

About 4 hrs. to NYC , where an odd 298 lb. purple DooG is known to prowl. Got any problem with that ?

My father grew up in Syracuse (Liverpool to be exact).

I liked it the few times I visited. I still have a lot of family there.

I would agree. I know a few of my family members who live there are very well off but I think the majority are poor.

Hey come on guys...they only got about 130" this past winter. What I mean is, is almost 11' of snow really THAT much??

I asked becuase I was admitted to Syracuse's bioengineering department. Everyone I had talked to seemed to really like the school and the area - after adapting to the winters - but I wanted to try and get a broader perspective of what people thought.

I am going up at the end of the month to check it out.

Thanks.
