Martial Arts
I'm interested in starting a martial arts sport.
I used to take Tae Kwon Do, but for some reason it wasn't action enough for me, although i was only in a Community center environment, there is a Tae Kwon Do school down the street i was interested in joining
I need a martial art that has:
Mind and body exercises
Control & Stability
Action packed
No weapons, i want to use my arms and legs, but some weapons are ok, but i want mostly hand to hand combat.
I hope this thread gets moved because it is the wrong area |

Ineb, Most martial arts programs you need to start at the bottom and get the moves down before you get into the more action packed situations. AFAIK they don't start people off with action packed arts. The ones I know of use mind and body excersises as that is part of thier doctrine to learn to have complete control of thier mind and body. if they don't have that the school is not worthy because a person needs to have that to understand and also in order to go to higher levels. Control and stablity comes with practice. Action packed. that will have to wait till you have acheived the levels that get into the more action packed stuff you are looking for.
if you want hand to hand combat. might I suggest boxing or kick boxing. Lacks in the other areas tho.
Just My opionion. Both of my kids are in karate and have been for the past 21 months.

Karate might be the answer you are looking for. The school my kdis go to have all that you are looking for. however the action packed stuff isn't till later. but they get a good workout in the meantime and learn thier moves too. Kids love it.
Why not check out the karate forms. Ask if they will allow you to partisipate for an evaluation evening or something.

I used to do Krav Maga.
No, there are no mind/body exercises but it is a very effective self defence system - and that's what it was meant to be, self-defence system, not much martial arts in the original sense.
Neostar is correct in that no style will start with whacking and hacking. It's pretty boring to start with, probably to fend off regular streetbeaters.

As some here know, I have/had a background in Judo.
Mind and Body . . . . . You bet!
Action packed . . . . . . . After you've mastered the falls! That can take some time, in some cases, 6-10 months if only practicing once a week!
Judo is known as the "gentlemen's" sport, punching and kicking are not allowwed. Throws, trips, foot sweeps, limb locks, hold-downs, and choke holds, are allowwed!
It is not unusual to see competitors still competing with broken bones (ribs, collar bones, arms, etc.). I normally competed with multiple broken toes from practicing on wrestling mats, and the worst was when I went into competition with 3 broken ribs, 3 cracked ribs, and a badly strained lower back. (All toes were taped as well!) Yeah, I won some of my matches, but geez did it hurt!

That sounds like football compared to rugby...
Like i said, i don't want a quick cheap thrill, but action packed in the long run, as into fast paced sparingf in the end, (Jet lee style)
I really like the benefits besides self defense and fighting, that's the reason why i got into it.
