Whose Who's Who?

I got a letter in the mail, it appears to be from that "Who's Who" registry, the really snobby one that, if you're in it, means you've arrived. Or something. Anyway, I am not immune to such flattery, but I have to wonder, is this the REAL Who's Who? Or another dang marketing/name-gathering-to-make-a-sucker-list deal?

Company name is "National Register". The letter claims there are no fees involved, so that's ok, but I'm wondering, is this the "real" Who's Who, or something else?

They sell your personal info to telemarketers and loan companies.

The National Register Publishing's American Art Directory is very legit. But it's also associated with Marquis.

One the other hand, there are some threads about in the various newsgroups about a firm who copycatted the name and is charging folks $300 for their service. Marquis DOES NOT charge. One is an honor and one is purely for vanity.

If it is the legit AAD, you should indeed feel honored. Very prestigious. Might be worth a little investigating before you shred the letter.
