No, I don't anyone has forgotten how US administrations, starting with Carter, supported Saddam after Americans were taken hostage in Iran. He was the new kid on the block back then and was seen as a moderating influence at the time. The US supported him during the Iran-Iraq war as the lesser of two evils.
Hindsight is 20-20.

I just thought it was a little bit of irony.

technically, creatures, it was biological and chemical precursors that were entirely legal. Behind the scenes, yeah - they were supporting Iraq vs. Iran. But then Iran was doing some very naughty things and holding hundreds of Americans hostage. Plus that was a long time ago in an entirely different atmosphere.
As far as OBL goes, yes, but then hindsight is 20 20, is it not, TBC? It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback and say what we should or shouldn't have done.
The unofficial slogan of the CIA is this: "Our failures are well known. Our successes are not."
And i know you were referring to the irony Creatures, not that you "love" that Saddam was in any way aided in his quest for chemical or biological weapons.
I think the new US stance on the old "enemy of my enemy" thing should be to adopt the X-Files slogan. Trust noone.

The turning point for Saddam going from good guy to bad guy was about the same time that Rumsfeld went to him face-to-face and proposed an oil pipeline to Jordan on behalf of the Bechtel corporation and Saddam refused saying it would be too open to attacks.

On Irony, it was the CIA backed coup that put Saddam in power in 1968. Before that, Iraq was a democracy.
