Why do Shiites hate the sunni's? ( I remember something about them splitting apart but can't remember what caused it) |
I actually heard this on NPR the other day. From what i remember hearing, it goes back to (i think) the prophet Mohammed, and the inherent problems with leadership following his death. There were no leadership provisions made in the event of his death, and 2 groups splintered off - the Shiites following who they believed should lead, and the Sunni's following who they thought was the true leader. I think it was the Sunni's who were in the minority, but that's the history of the 2 groups. That's what it dates back to, and I'm sure that they have grown further and further apart, with different laws and interpretations arising, different ways of life evolving, etc.
To me, a very interesting question is why the same thing hasn't occurred with Christianity. You have Catholicism, a whole slew of protestants, Baptists, Methodists, Jehova's Witnesses, Christian Science (Christian Scientists???), Lutheran ... and i'm sure many more I'm forgetting. I guess in a way it did happen, and one result (indirectly) was the formation of the United States. Many fled religious persecution from England way back when, but I'm unaware of any killing or wars that were religiously motivated between different sects of Christianity. But that's just a cursory thought, and it's entirely possible I'm missing something maybe even obvious.

And why do they hate the jew's so much that they will join together against them? ( they hated them before Israel had a state so the Jew's getting a state in the mid -east can't be the only reason) |
This one I'm pretty sure dates back to brothers - the sons of Abraham. Isaac was one of Abraham's sons, and Isaac was given all of Abraham's inheritance, including the lands of Israel. Abraham gave gifts to his other sons including Ishmael, who was his son through a concubine named Hagar, but Abraham sent him "into the east country" giving everything he had to Isaac. Both Isaac and his brothers claimed the inheritance of Abraham. Each contests the other. Isaac got it, obviously, as Abraham sent Ishmael and his brothers eastward. Ishmael took an egyptian wife (i think), and Arabs are the descendants of Ishmael. Jews are the descendants of Isaac.
So both the Jews and the Arabs are descendants of Abraham.
In short, this is why you
don't have concubines!
Anyone further in the know, correct me if i'm wrong.
