I have just been "released from employment"

I found out the bad news Monday morning when my supervisor called me in and had another guy in the office (probably as a witness to any potential "violence"). I was then informed by my supervisor that he was "releasing me from employment". It was 7 days short of my 6-month probation. I had visions of putting my home on the market, and moving back in with my parents. I asked him what I had done wrong (never had any employee evaluations) but he said he can't say, to talk to HR.

Luckily, since I have a civil service job, and I passed probation in my previous position, I was told to go back to my old boss in my old department! So I get to be rid of a horrible job with a terrible co-worker. I take a $2/hr pay cut and have to face my old peers. And, I get to keep the home!

I feel like I just got out of jail! I guess I'll always wonder what I did wrong, but I'm told that HR doesn't have to tell me. I can only think of 5 things I did wrong (could've been a combo of):

1. Got injured twice (very physical job)
2. Mentioned the department in a newspaper (and bragged to my co-workers about it)
http://www.sacticket.com/tv_radio/st...-7163800c.html
3. Spent money w/o asking ahead of time, especially for items that were Union rights like safety glasses (supervisor was a real tight-wad), bought biz cards, earned 1 hr OT, etc
4. They fully intended to use me, then toss me out like yesterday's paper.
5. Co-worker was a real jack-@ss to work under (had lots of nasty arguments; made me do all the garbage work)
6. Memory wasn't great (physical job that doesn't require a lot of thinking)

Oh well, that job only took about 1-2 months to master w/ no new learning skills. Staying there would've kept me in the same position for a long time. My old office has lots to learn, and pays for OT, but I take a $2/hr pay cut and drop down one level to my old position.

I know I'm lucky to still have a job, but did I deserve this?

Been there myself. It sucks getting fired. But, you can't take it personal. Just move on and realise that the job wasn't meant to be. Every job that I was fired from I was always a couple weeks away from quitting anyway. I've been fired twice and both jobs sucked big royale. So consider it a blessing in disguise .

Off the subject. Did you know that Nora Jones father is Ravi Shankar?

There ya go.. I bet you that had a big part of it. You should know better! Especially in the civil service arena. Never do anything with out approval. You gave them the ammo. You should still try to find out why. But approach it from a I want to learn what I did wrong so I don't repeat my mistake attitude. Then toe the line till you are tenured in your next move.
