GOOD NEWS for Once !

Senate defeats Bill to allow drilling in Alaska Wildlife Reserve 52-48.

Hooo--Haaa !

Leave the Wildlife and Alaska alone !

Believe me, the Oil Cos. aren't going to go broke !

Defend our Country from those who would despoil it.

Conserve ! Conserve ! Conserve !

Do we really need all those electronic gadgets?

da Geezers like me remember when we entertained ourselves.

Today a family gathering has become looking at a 42" TV for many families. Where are the story tellers. The singers ? The mixing of generations?

Whatever the reasons, today THE SENATE defended America. At least a piece of it.

Drilling there would reduce our dependency on foreign oil and would cause minimal problems. The Alaskan environment has not been harmed by drilling. Ships, yes, but not drilling.

I think it is a good move for the Republican congress to vote it down, though since they would catch a lot of flack because people are so against it.

This is a problem I have being an ultra conservative. I am also for preserving wildlife habitats. I hate the facts that were destroying so much of it. I think the United States does a fairly good job of protecting wildlife and does a lot to keep these lands from being developed. But, I can’t help but notice in all areas that wildlife is losing out. I notice everyday that our need to constantly upgrade and modernize ruins a lot of wildlife. For instance, I drive a road everyday on my route and notice all the road kill. What was once an easy path for animals to follow has now become a deathtrap. I hate to see dead animals on the sides of roads. Some people might not think it’s important, but I do. Anyway, it’s a shame that man and beast cannot share the planet equally. In the next 100 years I’m sure that many animals we see today will be long gone. What a pity.

Anyone care to actually find out how much land on this planet is actually developed? Not much. Drilling in Anwar will cause about as much of a problem for the wildlife up there as the Alaskan Pipeline is ( it's not, it's actually helping the wildlife thrive ).

The thing is, we are just about as conscious of the enviroment as we can be, and when we do things these days, we aren't out to just get the job done and get the heck outta dodge. We USED to clearcut forests, but now we HARVEST forests for wood. We plant more than we take. For people to look at the industries that work within natures beauty and think that they don't care about their environment, they might want to reconsider. I don't think there are very many nature hating lumberjacks out there.

Didn't I read somewhere that the entire oil from that field would equal about two weeks (monthes?) of US consumption?

Even if it were a years worth (obviously spread over several years) would it be worth the time and effort to develop?

Our prorated share

of all the oil reserve there is estimated at 6 weeks (I recall) of our consumption.

It would create a windfall for some oil Cos. and some Billions in monies toward the Fed. Budget.

I have to believe we could conserve around the oil we won't pump now--hopefully.

This is not a solution to our dependence on foreign oil--but a drop in the bucket. Whenever you introduce technology, experience has shown you'll need to send in more technology.

It doesn't matter what the source of an accident, with heavy equipment, pumps, and pipelines, they can--and probably will happen.

Why not just give the political contributers some money as 'payback' and leave the land alone ? Then everybody is happy !

Put me down under conservatives who support conservation. Nice to see I'm not alone.

The solution to dependence on foreign oil will be better technology. Fuel cells, etc.
