Need Resume Help!

Hey all, thx for reading in.

I graduated from tech school (Computer Science, but it was really a joke, I learned nothing) in 97, then got a job working for the railroad, which absolutely uses my back, not my brain. I'd really like to get into an office job. I've kept up with everything computers, I even build and fix computers on the side. A job has come open nearby wanting someone with experience in 95, 98, 2000, NT, and XP. Preference is given to those with skills in RAID, TCP/IP, Tape Backup, Network Printing and all kinds of other stuff. Since I haven't written a resume in 5 or 6 years, I'll take any pointers I can get! Also any sites where I could do some quick refreshing on networking and the other things listed would be a great help!!!

There is a piece of software called Resume Maker, or one similar. Then fill in the blanks. It will help you get things lined up and looking good. You should probably take some brush up courses and or get your Network Plus.. You'll look better on paper.
Or at least buy the book and brush up.

Hi jmebonner.

There are plenty of resources online. I've been updating my résumé for 2 years now...

First off, spell "résumé" correctly. People will be impressed. See those little marks over the "e's"? You make those by hitting ALT + 130.

Read on the job boards; many have a ton of great tips and how-to's for résumé writing, interviewing tips, etc. Some even have samples that you can copy from.

Visit these (and seek out others) job sites and poke around for their resources and job tools areas.

If you have a friend who has recently gotten a great job, ask to see his résumé to compare.

Your résumé can be considered worthless if spelling and grammar are not perfect. Double and triple check it and ask a fresh pair of eyes to read it if you have someone handy. Read it out loud to yourself.

If I can think of anything else, I'll come back. In the meanwhile, Good Luck!

Check out Brainbench.com for the IT stuff.

Finally, google.com it. You'll get info on the subject for days....

Just an opinion or pet peeve:

Don't try to fit too much on the page.

I don't know about anyone else, but reading through a lot of résumés can be cumbersome. It's refreshing to see the phrase '...available upon request' in regards to information headings not related to the position. Sometimes less can make more of an impact.

Using inside contacts to help find out exactly what they're looking for can help streamline a résumé quickly!

Good luck!

When spelled correctly... do both e's in resume have that little jobber over them? I thought just the last one did.
