Why are you an atheist?

Just out of interest really, I am curious to know what peoples reasons are for becoming atheists.

I guess I've always been an atheist. I've felt pretty much the same since, oh, second grade.

As Laplace is said to have answered to Napoleon, who asked him what role God played in his theories of the origin of the universe, " Sire, je n'ai pas eu besoin de cette hypothèse."

I am with Jacob on this one.
Both of my parent's aren't religious and I never saw the need to believe in God, so I still don't.

Found sitting in a hard wodden bench, or kneeling on a hard board reading the same old book to get quite tiresome, However if God ever knocks on my door and tells me to go I will. Until then I think it's more important and productive to believe in yourself.

The Earth has been here for 4 BILLION+ years. The dinosaurs were roaming around for millions. Mankind has been here for about one-tenth that amount of time (in one form or another). There are TRILLIONS of planets (probably more), space is endless and I don't believe for a second we're the only intelligent life. Not by a long shot.

Now with all that time and all that space and all those planets, do I believe some omnipotent being decided this was the place to set up shop? Nope.

Mankind, with all its supposed intelligence, is a superstitious bunch. In order to accept that some phenomenon exists, we need an explanation. When science fails, mythology takes over. Mythology has morphed into religion over the millenia, but the root fear of displeasing some god has stayed entrenched in our minds. That's what leads to extremism and hatred.

On the other hand, I would never attempt to convince a religious person he or she was wrong. I firmly believe in the right to worship as you please, as long as it doesn't trample other folk's rights. I've had many good friends who were devout Christians, Catholics, or Jews. Nothing wrong with that.

BTW, CM, that was much more subtle than posting a poll.

No scientific theory that has been given any real credence by the scientific community (including the old-earth theory, Darwin's theory etc) is contrary to religious (at least Christian) beliefs. I don't know about other religions enough to speak of them, though. They may be in contrast to some religious theories, but not contrary to what the Bible actually says.

I think very few people become atheists. I think the vast majority of atheists were simply not led to religion early in life and are skeptical for a myriad of reasons.
