Insidious politicians wishing to desecrate the graves of the dead to score points in the polls?

Business as usual I guess.

Brown-Waite, a freshman Republican, said she decided to sponsor the bill after she was approached by a constituent who said he wanted to bring home his father, who was killed in World War II and buried in France

Yea you got to say this sure desecration is mean. Offering to help the families of the fallen hero's of wwII and wwI. Helping them to recover loved ones from a place that the family believes does not respect, appreciate, or deserve the honor. (mind you on a per family basis). If you believe france deserves your fallen then you should not have to move it.

introducing legislation providing financial help This statement leads me to believe this would be aid to the family of the fallen return their loved ones. (not a whosale repatriation against the will loved ones)

I think this is an appropriate slap in the face as long as it does not go against the will of the families.

I think it's the fact that this bill was proposed recently as the U.S. Government is trying to pressure France a bit. Freedom fries and then this? Come on...

There is no doubt that timing is everyting. However coincident with this people do not want their loved ones in france. Perhaps (almost definitely) a request like this would fall on deaf ears in other times. Right now france is making people want their loved ones out of a country which does not respect the sacrifices of the american heros who fell defending them.

Is there political motivation yea. Is the political edge that this will provide going to make people get re elected, or is the political edge that right now is the best time to get the votes needed for passage.

I would not abstain or vote for a politician based on how they vote on this issue.

France Seeks Renaming of Lafayette Square to "Place d'Ingratitude"; Demands Return of Statue of Liberty

(Why not? The US doesn't have a monopoly on idiocy.)

Ingratitude

key operative word there.

I would give em the statue of liberty. Dang thing requires too much maintenence anyway.

America could make it bigger and better and not look like a man in a dress.

I think it is best to leave them there as a constant reminder to French citizens. In fact, not enough attention is paid to these graves in our own national ceremonies. We should turn up the volume and and make a much bigger deal than we do for those who died on foreign soil!

However, If a family wants to remove the remains to the USA, let them. They were buried there for convenience. In you live in the USA it is very inconvenient to go their to place flowers. And it was a very inconvenient place to die...

wouldn't a ground swell movement to take all the bodies off of that unworthy ground be a better statement then just a simple reminder?
