Would you invite a complete stranger in?

This is what I don't understand about this Smart family. Why the hell did the mom invite a complete stranger to come thier house?Talk about stupid.Kindness is fine and dandy, but don't be so naive next time lady. You were lucky this time, next time you may not be.Still, I'm glad for the girls sake.

I agree... These people had a strange tendancy to allow these strange men into their homes to do work..

Well, in Utah, there are many such people (the abductors, not the Smart family) who are in a different errr....orbit. Religious fanatics.

This dude says God told him that he needs a wife like Elizabeth Smart so he just went and got her.

Not much one can do to protect against that type of wackos. If not in the house, he'd have grabbed her in school or playing somewhere.

The perps should get the death penalty in my opinion if found guilty.

Well I think it's just human nature to want to believe the best about everyone, give them the benifit of the doubt. It's just programmed in our nature.A clean cut person comes along, and you just want to believe the best.

Would I invite a stranger in the house, maybe, depends on who,and the circumstances.Of course I live in a fairly "safe" community so maybe that's why

The kids can leave thier bikes on the porch, and we can leave the keys in the car during the day without worrying. I love living here

As far as this guy being "clean-cut".. This fellow (the kidnapper) was a street person (and from the photos I've seen - looked as if he'd recently crawled out of a dumpster) who begged Mrs. Smart for cash. Somehow they got's a talkin' and she decided she liked his character, and coincidentally needed someone to help her husband work on their roof.

Richard Ricci is another criminal they somehow encountered. Although, fortunately, he wasn't the type to kidnap a child.

I don't want anyone in my house that I donot consider a friend. Maybe the plumber, I hate plumbing, . If anyone comes here they better have their ID ready. Jackson is not a very nice city. It was nice place to live 30 years ago . Will be leaving as soon as feasible. Don't move HERE!!!!

Maybe next time she should throw the stranger a half a C note. Judging by the looks of the house they have I'm sure they can afford it.

The vast majority of people are aware of when somebody has their wiring so messed up as to present a hazard to their lives. That is, we KNOW.

Although sometimes, the freak with the messed-up wiring is really good at hiding their defect. I think that's what happened in this instance. At least we can be thankful this freak didn't kill that young girl.

In the hideous and unusual instances where a crime like this happens, it gets lots of MEDIA ATTENTION, and makes the weak-minded portion of our society even more afraid than they were before...and that's pretty darn fearful, let me tell you!

My point is, in most cases, people who open their arms to other people, well, it works out just fine for all concerned.
