Crud, too late to see good war movies in theatres......

having just recently stocked up on WWII movies i wanted to see. i thought to myslef " I wish i could have seen these in theaters" but its too late now. Im to be 15 in august, and if iwas this age when saving private ryan came out, i would have seen it. but i wasnt. so my point is-who is going to make the next war classic? its going to be tough, and what war would they do it on..... I suppose we shall see.

They should make more about the WWII Pacific Theater. Those islands were more hellish and infested than all of Europe and Africa combined.

The Thin Red Line was pretty good. I think it was released around the same time as Priv Ryan. Check it out

We need a good Eastern Front film, maybe from the Russian perspective. Cross of Iron and Stalingrad aren't bad, but it would be good to see one with modern effects and production values.

I agree, WW2 Pacific (or maybe Korea) would be good too. Far too many of those gung-ho 1950s John Wayne ones colour many people's perception of that theatre. Recent films have been far more honest in their portrayal of atrocities and bravery on all sides, without the racism and nationalism evident in many of the war films of the 1940s-1960s. IMO its a good trend.

Although I found Saving Private Ryan very cliched and overly sentimental in places (Band of Brothers was superior in that respect), I felt that the it really portayed the brutality and randomness of combat. I doubt many came away thinking "war is cool, I want to play"...

yeah, was thinking about Thin red Line......they do need some new Russian front movies. Enemy at the Gates was OK, except they had British accents, and it was about a sniper, not the war.

Yeah, the English accents were a little annoying, but overall it's still a great movie.

If you are making up a library of stuff, check out "Attack!" with Jack Palance, and "Paths of Glory" (WW1 film) with Kirk Douglas. Both are far more character driven and focus on the effects of war on the soldier rather than the battle that rages around them.
Directed by Robert Aldrich and Stanley Kubrick respectively, both are black and white
