Britain's former 500cc motorcycle world champion Barry Sheene has died after losing his long battle with cancer.
Sheene, who has been residing in Australia for many years died in a hospital on Queensland's Gold Coast. Monday afternoon AEST. He was 52.
His cancer was diagnosed in July 2002, just days after competing in a legends race during the British Grand Prix at Donington.
Sheene visited a doctor after complaining of a sore throat and trouble with swallowing.
Sheene won the motorcycle world championship in 1976 and 1977.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and two children, daughter Sidonie, 18, and son Freddie, 14.
Sad. He will be much missed.
