Pentagon seeks a nuclear digger

The Pentagon is about to take the first public step to produce an earth-penetrating nuclear weapon that could be aimed at North Korea's underground nuclear and missile production facilities, Bush Administration officials say.

Within a week, an air force report is to be delivered to the House of Representative and the Senate, stating the military requirements for the "robust nuclear earth penetrator," a device designed to dig into the ground before it explodes and crushes any facility buried beneath it.

David Albright, president of the Institute for Science and
International Security and an expert on North Korea, said, "It is a bad idea to develop these things, which probably would never be used, and do so openly. It develops a lot of paranoia among proliferating states who believe the US is planning to
attack them."

We already have them and have since the 1990's. There is more info at this site. The site also explains tthey want to develop a newer version.

This is a very tough one to take sides on. North Korea has breached the NPT http://www.fas.org/nuke/control/npt/ and if Irag has nuclear weapons or is trying to develop them they are also in direct violation of this treaty. Should we also violate this treaty?

This isn't new, we are just screwing with people's minds. Here we are with a war on the way and another in the oven and we still have time and resources to develop even better bombs. N. Korea, Franca, Arab states, are resource poor. This stuff just intimidates them further. I know, we shouldn't be so mean to people...

N. Korea probably thinks the UN will save them!
